Regular readers of “So What” know that I am passionate about TWO things: Politics and sports.
When I first started this newsletter, I knew I wanted to keep it primarily focused on the first of those passions. Which I have, generally, done.
Over the past year, I’ve expanded out from politics to, occasionally, write about my laid-off life (and what comes next). And I’ve even written about sports — most notably in my rant against Aaron Rodgers. (He really does suck.)
Through this process, I realized a few things:
I wanted to find a way to write more about sports
I already write a LOT via “So What” — and didn’t want to flood your inboxes any more than I already do
In talking about wanting to scratch that sports itch, I reconnected with a former colleague named Steve Hull. Steve had an idea — a site that aimed to use the lens of history to look at modern-day happenings in the sports world.
I was super intrigued. We started talking — and came up “The Replay,” a sports Substack that officially launched today.
As I wrote in the mission statement for “The Replay”:
Our goal here is simple: We want to use sports history to make our current sports debates better informed — and more fun.
You can’t talk about whether Caitlin Clark is the best women’s college basketball player ever unless you know about Cheryl Miller.
You can’t talk about whether the Russell Wilson trade was the worst in NFL history unless you know about Herschel Walker trade in 1990.
You can’t talk about whether Nick Saban was the greatest college football coach of all time unless you talk about Bear Bryant.
My goal is to write a daily post for “The Replay.” (Today I wrote about the 5 best buzzer beaters in the history of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.) I’ll write about the NFL, NBA, college hoops (men and women), baseball and soccer as well as some golf, tennis, hockey — and the occasional odd sport like Russian Wrestleball.
What will this mean for “So What”? Absolutely nothing! My gift is that I can write a lot — and quickly! So you should expect the same basic level of output you’ve always gotten in this space!
But, if you love sports or nostalgia or especially sports nostalgia, I’d hope you check out what we are building at “The Replay.”
And thanks, as always, for your continued support.
Chris
Good luck with this Chris, I wish you many grand slams, no fumbles or interceptions, lots of birdies and an eagle or two, easy dunks, ….I ran out of metaphors, but you get the idea….keep in mind that if you have just one hit out of three your likely to be an all star.
