New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, the leader of his party in the Senate, went on CNN’s Dana Bash’s show on Sunday.

It, um, didn’t go well.

Dana asked Schumer about what he and his party were doing about President Donald Trump’s efforts to withhold federal funding from Harvard University over questions about their commitment to so-called “woke” policies and alleged tolerance of anti-semitism.

Here’s Schumer’s answer: “We sent him a very strong letter just the other day asking eight very strong questions.”

You can watch Schumer’s full interview here:

A “very strong letter,” you say? With “eight very strong questions”? That should do the trick! I am sure that won’t immediately be thrown in the trash by the president!

I kid — but I think there are two very serious points here:

  1. Schumer is already under fire from the left for not being an effective messenger in the Trump era. This, um, won’t help.

  2. The truth? Schumer’s not wrong. He can’t do much of anything! Because Democrats don’t control the House, Senate or White House. While Schumer definitely shouldn’t have said the “letter” thing — I mean it was a “very strong letter”!!! — the reality is that unless and until Democrats win back control a chamber of Congress, they can’t do much of anything. Which is why Democrats desperately need to find a way to win back the House or Senate — likely the House — next November.

I spend a lot of time talking and writing about Donald Trump in this space. And I will continue to do so. But the reality is that there are two major parties in this country. And Democrats are not in very good shape these days.
