It is truly shameful. About all I can do in protest is boycott CBS. Maybe if enough of us do, it will make a difference.

Kim Nesvig's avatar

Agree wholeheartedly. Boycotts may be the only tools we have left to resist the autocracy.

Ed Johnson's avatar

I believe I will write CBS and Paramount and let them know.

The "only tool" we have? Study history. We call it "The American Revolution" for a reason.

WHAT IF? by Ellen Nelson's avatar

What do you think about convincing Hakeem and the DNC to organize an open well structured presidential primary, encourage lots of candidates of any persuasion to participate; schedule rounds of debates everywhere that highlight the effects of the financial and political boondoggle forced on us by Pinocchios big bad bill; and require candidates to present precise plans for governing like Elissa Slotkin’s? I want to see this. It’s a way to feature and introduce candidates early on, to get the truth out everywhere, raise the interest level, get positive energy vibes in a broad swath of the electorate, control the narrative (not reactive), create the stories we want people know/believe/live!

LET’s DO IT!!!!!!

Chris, my blood is boiling too! But, this is what MSM doesn’t understand, Trump states a lie not once or twice but he & his brown nosers repeat it over & over & over again until he has everyone believing his lie. He then goes in for the kill. If you have kids you should recognize the child’s version of this behavior. Child: I want a cookie! Mom: No, it’s too close to dinner Child: I want a cookie NOW! Mom: I said no cookie and that’s final! Child starts screaming and crying I want a cookie over & over. Still screaming. Mom: Ok! Ok! One cookie! Now shut up and eat it! SAME game Trump plays except he starts his fit with a BIG BEAUTIFUL LIE & repeats it over and over and over! it ends after he has worn down his opponent until all they want to do is get him the fuck out of their face! Paramount, Congress, Harvard they all have the funds with which to fight back w/o succumbing to Trump! Dems, independents, & independent news people, MSM, all who want to stop Trump & save our Democracy MUST speak the truth, show the evidence of the truth over & over & over again in every state, every day, every minute. They should all be on the same page telling the truth to we the people! Drown out Trump & his lying minions. Besides, No one wants a DJT library! Full of lies, no actual & truthful information. He’ll never build one. He’ll keep the money for himself. He always says, you spend other people’s money, not your own!

Thank you, Chris! This is an example of one of the contradictions of a capitalist society. While everyone has the right to start a business and make a profit from it, and there are good things that can and do result from the formation of those businesses, there are times when a focus on profit can create harm to other things that are good for society. I believe this is one of them. Others can't force organizations like Paramount to do the right thing. Thank goodness there are independent voices like your pointing out this dilemma.

This is why people think Trump is a threat to democracy, Chris.

Sam's avatar

Seconding Sam. We don't need to have no or a cheated election for there to be issues with democracy caused by Trump. Paramount should not have rolled over, but he also shouldn't have sued.

Phyllis Greenberg's avatar

He loves to sue. That’s his action and he’s a bully. Paramount should have never rolled over.

Trump will most likely have complete control over The Trump Presidential Library, and is guaranteed to show the depth of his intellect. I look forward to visiting and have an opportunity to read the complete works of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys....

Dead on. It analogous to what's happening with major law firms and universities. The ones that cave are humiliated while the ones who fight back have -- thus far -- prevailed.

Utterly Shameful! The first amendment clearly is intended to protect free speech, and Trump has built a career and presidency by exploiting his First Amendment right to lie. Even his bogus charges against 60 Minutes are Trump exploiting that right. Now, Shari Redstone has shredded the First Amendment for the purpose of assuring herself a $540 million payday. We know the value she places on free speech.

I am disgusted on so many fronts these days that I worry my emotional health is in jeopardy.

CBS has two franchises worth buying: 60 Minutes ànd Dick Wolf. They just fucked 60

minutes, where à good bit of the team is likely to walk. You can’t do journalism for the Ellisons, apparently. PS no one should complain about DEI while Shari Redstone, president of the Lucky Sperm Club, walks the earth and controls capital

John Phillips's avatar

Where are they going to walk to?

Tim Mullaney's avatar

Honestly, most of them are old enough to retire. It’s not a low paying job. The producers in their 30s bd 40s have different incentives. Lesley Stahl, 83, will likely decide life is too short to take this, esp if it means she can’t do real journalism. Pelley put it on the line in his Wake Forest speech. Anderson Cooper can do CNN and has money. Some will make the best of it . But I’d go if I had $$ ànd couldn’t do the job the right way

He’s always filling suit against someone for something that makes him look bad!! He was asked to do an interview for 60 minutes and he refused.

CBS' folding of its tent was as depressing as it was predictable.

Mary Harriet Talbut's avatar

I HATE THIS! I hate that they paid so they could get their merger approved. I HATE that Trump targets journalists who are doing their job.

David Browne's avatar

Chris, I was going to save this for your weekly questions, but because of the holiday I realize you may skip it this week.

Would you consider this to be a bribe because Ms Redstone offered it or extortion because Trump demanded it?

This ranks about 999 out of the worst 1000 things done by Trump, so it is entirely on brand for Chris that this is

the one thing he gets exercised about (oh, and uses it for an advertising plug).

You are NOT a news creator. The news is what you report, analyze, discuss. It really bothers me that you have chosen to use this incorrect meaning. I’d love to hear Tony’s take on this use of the phrase “news creator” the next time you’re on his podcast.

William m Gaffney's avatar

My mother, the school teacher, would definitely correct Chris on this particular phrase. Maybe you should call it "Just the facts ma'am"
