The lesson learned is that we want Obama era politics diplomacy

They like the racism. It wasn’t the Epstein files, it wasn’t the economy, it wasn’t keeping us out of wars. Everything is gone but the racism, which is intensifying, and they still support him. There is nothing else to say.

What do you think of the two SCOTUS reforms we've all read about? (You've probably answered this one.)

1. Extend the ethics rules for federal district judges and appellate judges to the Supreme Court justices. (Could Congress do that without a constitutional amendment?)

2. Expand the Supreme Court so there are 13 justices. (Again, could Congress do that without a constitutional amendment?)

I'm really asking about your view of the wisdom of these two moves, apart from the feasibility. Are these good ideas?

Here’s an idea— I don’t know how easy it would be to make this happen, and maybe it might end up just a once in a while thing— but they do a thing on hacks on tap where they’ll address questions and bring jonathan martin or somebody on and a conversation between three or more political scientists happens. I don’t miss that when you do the solo thing, but it’s always a treat when you talk with Chuck, also JVL and Gabe and Margie etc etc., and if once in a while an AMA plus a guest or two could happen, that could be fascinating. I see you and these other luminaries as the main artery of my understanding of politics, and if the post and the times are talking about this stuff too, at this point I don’t think I need what those entities are selling. Even just reading Gabe alone, I suspect, one would be more informed than the NYT would make them. I don’t mean any disrespect to that great paper at its best, or the Post when people like David Broder and of course you were there. But I think we are all getting some pretty serious coverage from you and your many colleagues. It makes this era almost tolerable.

I really enjoyed this format. I’m a sucker for all your content, pretty much, but given that this era is so crazy, with so many moving parts— many of them broken and not working, but still moving— it really is very comforting to know we can ask you questions and hear what you think in a format like this.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your thoughtful reply to my question today. I find the psyche behind Trump support to be a disturbing fascination, one that we won’t readily figure out. I try every day, but don’t think I am getting any closer to cracking those nutcases.

Thought you might like to read a couple of my essays pertaining to this subject, so here are the links if you are interested. Note the pub dates.

What is going on with the WNBA? Why the hatred and targeting for the best player in the league Caitlin Clark? She has done more for that league as far as recognition, increased player salaries and pure enjoyment of sport no one ever paid attention to much less watched. She’s a once in a generation player, iconic like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan or Muhammad Ali yet despised by those around her. In makes no sense at all. Where does all the hatred on left come from?

Bill Bachhuber's avatar

Dutch…tell me you actually care about the WNBA….the Caitlyn Clark thing gets more press because of her coming into the league with such fanfare and to put it bluntly….her skin color. The ‘next big thing’ in any sport gets this treatment….ask Lebron….Michael Jordan….the list is endless…sort of the dues you pay with such expectations…

Dutch's avatar

Paying her dues bc of her skin color, really???

Fist to the throat fingers to the eyes, Jordan & LeBron went through that??

I don’t recall any of that to be honest in fact didn’t they used to talk about “Jordan Rules” how you couldn’t even breathe on him or you’d get called for a foul.

I’ve watched a lot of basketball and a lot of sports I’ve never seen someone targeted like Caitlin Clark. You might think it’s ok bc of her skin color (??) but I don’t agree with you…. Not at all

Johnny Jazz's avatar

Actually you are confused about the Jordan Rules, it was quite the opposite. It refers to how physical the Detroit Pistons played against him.

Bill Bachhuber's avatar

First off I never said it was ok…..the Jordan rules did not cover the early years….yes because of her skin color….welcome to America in 2026…sucks but that’s where we are…..honestly I pay little to no attention to the WNBA but it happens throughout pro sports….

Dutch's avatar

You should watch it!

Or just YouTube a few clips of Caitlin Clark, she’s amazing! Very enjoyable if you like sports. Dominates like the young Tiger Woods back in the day. She’s truly a once in a generation player!! Hope you do.

Have a great 4th!

Bill Bachhuber's avatar

Thanks Dutch and I hope you have a great fourth….being from Connecticut we watched a ton of women’s college hoops and actually college hoops is my main interest. So I saw a lot of her during her Iowa college career….an amazing talent….what they call ‘inside the gym’ range…

Meaning one that would stand up to constitutional scrutiny.

Recent multiple stories have detailed Trump's massive wealth gain during this term. They are, to say the least, overwhelming. Those are coupled with stories about how he's using tax funds for numerous ego projects, some of which have or will destroy historical or endangered areas. Do you ever think those will be enough for Republican leaders to say enough is enough? I'm old enough to remember, despite what JD Vance recently said, that Republicans were the ones who told Nixon it was time to resign because of his actions. Please give me some hope.

Bill Bachhuber's avatar

There is literally NO LINE he can cross that will turn away his hardcore ‘believers’…..sorry to stomp on your hope but that is the hard fact…

Sadly, I agree.

I occasionally read maga’s posts on FB to keep up with their entertaining views. In response to trump’s accumulating wealth they applaud it as evidence of his power and brilliance. They bend their thoughts about him to the point that their minds have snapped.
