Now we know what President Joe Biden says about Donald Trump when the TV cameras aren’t rolling.
This, from Politico, is eye-opening:
The president has described Trump to longtime friends and close aides as a “sick fuck” who delights in others’ misfortunes, according to three people who have heard the president use the profane description. According to one of the people who has spoke with the president, Biden recently said of Trump: “What a fucking asshole the guy is.”
My private assessment:
a) Makes sense when you consider the clear disdain Biden shows for Trump in public
b) Far from the first time Biden’s tendency to use, er, salty language has spilled into the public eye
Back in 2022, Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy shouted a question to the president; “Do you think inflation is a political liability after the midterms,” Doocy asked.
Biden, who thought his mic was off, responded mockingly: “No, it’s a great asset – more inflation. What a stupid son of a bitch.”
Then there was the time in 2023, when, while touring the damage caused by Hurricane Ian in Florida, Biden told a local official: “No one fucks with a Biden.”
For what it’s worth, the man — the mayor of Fort Myers Beach — took it all in stride. “It was not directed at anybody. It was just two guys talking,” he told NBC. “It didn’t faze me one bit. That’s just the way two guys talk to each other from our respective backgrounds.”
And, of course, the most famous moment of Biden’s public/private swearing came in 2010 when, at a signing ceremony for Obamacare, the then vice president leaned over to President Barack Obama and told him: “This is a big fucking deal.”
There might have been a time when people would gasp at a president (or vice president) using curse words. That time, to my mind, is long past. For better or worse, we have Donald Trump, at least in part, to thank for it.
This, from the New York Times in 2019, nails it:
His is the profanity presidency, full of four-letter denunciations of his enemies and earthy dismissals of allegations lodged against him. At rallies and in interviews, on Twitter and in formal speeches, he relishes the bad-boy language of a shock jock, just one more way of gleefully provoking the political establishment bothered by his norm-shattering ways.
In a single speech on Friday alone, he managed to throw out a “hell,” an “ass” and a couple of “bullshits” for good measure. In the course of just one rally in Panama City Beach, Fla., earlier this month, he tossed out 10 “hells,” three “damns” and a “crap.” The audiences did not seem to mind. They cheered and whooped and applauded.
I think politicians swearing has gone from a “can you believe he did that?” to a “hell yeah he did that.”
For Trump’s supporters, the cursing is some sort of proof positive that he is authentic. (Authentically what is a good follow up question.)
My guess is the response to Biden’s private assessment of Trump will be similar. Scranton Joe being Scranton Joe, and the like.
Plus, Biden supporters have probably used those same words (or worse) to describe Trump. So I seriously don’t think they will be anything but thrilled to hear the Democratic incumbent speaking about his likely challenger in such blunt terms.
What do you think?

I fucking love President Biden. 😉
My dad used to say that we should use “salty language” only when nothing else would do. Cursing isn’t part of my day-to-day vocabulary. When talking about Donald J Trump, though, that goddamn fucking SONofaBITCH criminal lying shitbag…..the invective just flows. It feels so right. President Joe Biden is much more restrained than I could ever be
