Welcome to Chris Crucial. This nightly newsletter — in which I summarize all the political news you need to know from the day — is for paid subscribers only. Here’s the good news: While the price for a subscription to “So What” is going up on April 1, if you act now you can lock in the lowest rate for the life of your subscription. That’s just $5 a month or $50 for the year!!
1. It’s the organization, stupid: Here’s a headline from the Associated Press today that caught my eye: “Trump slow to invest in states that could decide election as some in GOP fear ‘skeleton’ campaign.”
Here’s the key paragraph of the story:
Indeed, just six months before the first early votes are cast in the general election between Trump and Biden, Trump’s Republican Party has little general election infrastructure to speak of.
The piece details how, in the swing state of Michigan, for example, the Republican National Committee is yet to transfer any money to the state party to aid the construction of an organization to turn out votes for the former president.
“We’ve got the skeleton right now,” Michigan state GOP chair (and former member of Congress) Pete Hoekstra told the AP. “We’re going to have to put more meat on it.”
Which seems odd — given that a) it’s only 223 days before the general election and b) building statewide political organizations takes lots of time (and lots of money).
