1. A newsless January 6 is news
January 6, 2025 passed with little more than a murmur as the Congress quickly counted and then certified Donald Trump’s November 2024 victory.
There were no objections to individual state results. There were no alternate slates of electors. There was no pressure exerted on the sitting vice president of the United States to send the electoral votes back to the states.
When it was over, that vice president — Kamala Harris, who lost the election to Trump — didn’t protest. Or insist she had been robbed of a victory. Instead, she said this:
Today I did what I have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath I have taken many times to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.
It was a stark contrast from how that counting process played out four years ago as, egged on by Trump, protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the counting of the vote.
Trump, never one to take the path of graciousness, or demonstrate much self-awareness, put out two notes via Truth Social to, er, commemorate the day.
