1. Trump’s Bible: I am not totally sure why but the idea of Donald Trump hocking a bible —and getting a cut, natch, of the profits — has stuck in my craw for the last few days.
But, it has. And it’s led me to do a deepish dive into all of the things that Trump has said about the Bible — and religion more generally. And, dear reader, it a journey.
I am not going to go through ALL of it — because this newsletter would take you 45 minutes to read. But, I do want to remind you of just some of the things Trump has said about religion during his public life.
In the earliest days of his candidacy — July 2015 — Trump insisted that “I go to church and I love God and I love my church.” He was then asked whether he had ever asked God for forgiveness. He said he had not before adding: “When I drink my little wine – which is about the only wine I drink – and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed. I think in terms of ‘let’s go on and let’s make it right.’”
