1. An election no one wants
I started last nightβs βChris Crucialβ newsletter with a chart. Well, I am going to do it again!
Peep this from a Pew national poll:
Just to be totally clear what you are looking at: Half of the voters in the country (49%) would like both President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump replaced on the national ticket.
HALF!
But wait, thereβs more! Six in ten people who SUPPORT Biden want both candidates replaced β including their preferred candidate. (The number among Trump supporters is lower β 35% want both candidates replaced.)
Why are people so unhappy with their options? Pew has the answer to that question too! Here it is, in chart form:
Again, letβs be clear what weβre looking at. A huge majority of voters β 65%! β are not confident that Biden has the βphysical fitnessβ to do the job of president. And nearly that same number (59%) say that they lack confidence that Trump will act ethically in office.
Letβs reset for a minute here.
a) We have two major party nominees that a near-majority of the country want to replace on the ballot.
b) The Democratic nominee is seen, by a large majority of the country, as physically unable to do the job he is seeking
c) The Republican nominee is seen, by a large majority of the country, as too corrupt to do the job he is seeking.
Of all the remarkable elements of this election β a former president facing a current president, the advanced ages of the two men, Trumpβs many criminal charges β this, to me, is the most amazing of all of them.
