Happy Friday!
We made it!
I am on my way down to Washington & Lee University for a soccer thing soon. So if you have tips of where to eat (and drink!) in Lexington, VA (or the environs) shoot me an email at cillizzac@gmail.com. Thanks in advance!
And if you’ve got the time, come join my Friday livestream at 1 pm eastern over at my YouTube channel. These are fun!
Ok, let’s do this. Lots of questions to get to.
Q: If you were Joe Biden and you only had one item, program, issue or event you could use to either promote yourself or attack Donald Trump, what would it be?
A: This is an easy one. It would be an issue. And that issue would be abortion. Ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in the summer of 2022, it has been a terrific issue for Democrats and a terrible one for Republicans.
Abortion — and the anger around it being taken away as a national right — fueled a better-than-expected 2022 midterm election for Democrats. And I think it is the main ingredient in Democrats’ series of successes in special elections last year and this year.
And, Republicans still don’t have a good answer on it. Trump kicked the can to “next week” (uh huh) when asked about his position on abortion earlier this week.
He’s caught between abortion hardliners — like Ron DeSantis — who are passing laws like the 6 week ban in Florida and the political reality that bans like that are extremely unpopular among swing, female voters.
Trump has promised he will find a position that makes everyone happy. I highly doubt that. Biden should remind voters at every event that Trump appointed three conservative justice to the Court — the same justices that led the charge to overturn Roe.
I think it is, by far, the best issue for Democrats in the 2024 race.
