The question I get more than any other — and I get it every week — goes like this: Why don’t you think Donald Trump is destroying democracy?

I’ve offered a bunch of answers to this question — usually in my Friday Mailbag column — but, of late, I've a) wanted to address it in a more fulsome way and b) happened upon a metaphor that I think is really useful to explain how I think about Trump and democracy.

It’s a rubber band.

Yes, the simple rubber band.
