The 2024 election was a disaster for Democrats. Not only did Donald Trump win back the White House but Republicans retook the Senate majority and kept — albeit narrowly — their House majority. There are now more Republican governors (27) than Democratic ones (23). Republicans control almost 60% of the state legislative bodies in America.
Simply put: Democrats are in the political wilderness.
That fact is beyond debate.
But what is VERY much up for debate is what Democrats should do and say from here. As in: What do they need to do to get OUT of the wilderness?
I have been thinking about that question for a while now. And trying to figure out the best way to think about it — and cover it.
Here’s where I landed: I am launching a weekly show — via Substack Live — I am calling “Out of the Wilderness.”
The goal will be to talk to Democratic elected officials, party strategists and anyone else with a smart thought on how the party finds its way back to political relevance.
The first of these conversations will be TODAY at 2 pm eastern with
of . Ruy has long been a critical and original thinker about where the Democratic party is and where it needs to go. I am very much looking forward to it and I hope you can join us.To do so, just download the Substack app on your phone (if you haven’t already) and, if you subscribe to this newsletter, you will get a notice when we go live at 2 pm!
One other thing: I want YOUR help when it comes to who I should have on “Out of the Wilderness”! If there’s a Substacker or an elected official or, really, anyone, that you think would add to this conversation about where Democrats are and where they need to go, throw their name in the comments section — and I will do my best to book them on the show!
As I said, my goal is to do at least one of these conversations on Substack Live each week. Some weeks I may do more!
“Out of the Wilderness” will be FREE show for ALL subscribers. But it is my hope that if these conversations — and the other content I am creating here — are of value to you, you will consider becoming a paid subscriber. It’s $6 a month or $60 for the year.
Fetterman, he seems to be very loudly looking for a way back to "civilization"
