I was in the middle of making the case that President Donald Trump’s death grip around the GOP’s throat was loosening slightly — Andy Ogles’ loss in Tennessee last week, Mike Lindell’s defeat in Minnesota on Tuesday, Darline Graham’s less-than-stellar performance in South Carolina — when my friend Matt Lewis stopped me dead in my tracks.
Matt’s point was this: Trump’s grip is actually stronger than ever — because there is no longer any debate in a GOP primary about which candidate supports Trump and who doesn’t. Trump has so purged the GOP of any dissenting voices that the only question now in GOP primaries is who supports Trump the MOST doggedly. Supporting Trump is, in Matt’s words, the sine qua non of Republican politics now.
Which, well, damn it, he’s right. And I really wish I had thought of that!
