Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to rule out a run for governor of California in 2026 while keeping the door to a 2028 presidential bid open is a misreading of her political capital and the political moment.

Before I get into why, let’s hear from Harris:

“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor. I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election….

For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office. I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.”

That “for now” is doing a LOT of work. It’s clearly Harris’ attempt to wink and nod at the idea that while she’s not running for office in 2026, she is definitely not ruling out running for office down the line — in, say, 2028 for example.

If I am wrong and Harris is simply done with political life, then you can ignore everything I am about to say. (You may do that anyway. Ha!) She is under no requirement to keep running for things. If she has decided that a less-public life appeals to her, more power to her!

But, if that was the case, why the “for now”? If you want to be a private citizen, why not make that clear? Why leave the door open?

Because, I think, Harris is either planning to run for president in 2028 or wants to give the idea a very hard look over the next 18 months.

Which, to go back to where I started, is a mistake.

To read my full case against “Harris 2028,” you need to be a paid subscriber! If you value someone who is trying to forge a truly independent path amid the partisan screamers and the legacy media billionaires, I hope you consider becoming an investor in me. It’s $6 a month or $60 for the whole year.
