Less than an hour before the state’s 7 pm eastern time filing deadline Wednesday night, Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines shocked the political world by announcing he would not run for a third term.
Minutes before that announcement, Kurt Alme, the U.S. Attorney for Montana, filed to run for the seat as a Republicans. Both Daines and President Donald Trump quickly endorsed Alme.
Democracy in action! Not.
Also on Wednesday, former University of Montana president Seth Bognar filed to run for the seat as an independent, with the blessing of former Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester.
