I have been souring on Twitter for a while now.
At first my main complaint was how nasty everyone seemed to be — and how the service seemed to reward those people.
Since Elon Musk bought Twitter, however, my issue is the utter capriciousness that governs the site. It appears to operate almost entirely based on one man’s whims.
The latest of those whims was to limit Substack content — and put messages suggesting the content might have been harmful — in response to the news that Substack was rolling out a new feature called Notes.
This is not how a free speech absolutist should behave!
And, for me, it just made me more interested to figure out what Notes was — and how I could use it.
Here’s what Notes is: It’s a place to share links, short posts, quotes, photos, and more. I plan to use it for things that don’t fit in the newsletter, like work-in-progress or quick questions. Also my random musings on life, the universe and everything.
I am hoping it’s Twitter sans Elon. And with the potential for serious conversations as opposed to shouting matches.
I am going to be active on Notes for the foreseeable future. I hope you come try it out too!
How to join
Head to substack.com/notes or find the “Notes” tab in the Substack app. As a subscriber to So What? , you’ll automatically see my notes. Feel free to like, reply, or share them around!
You can also share notes of your own. I hope this becomes a space where every reader of So What? can share thoughts, ideas, and interesting quotes from the things we're reading on Substack and beyond.
If you encounter any issues, you can always refer to the Notes FAQ for assistance. Looking forward to seeing you there!
I walked away from Twitter the day after the self-proclaimed "Chief Twit" allowed professional Jew-hater Andrew Anglin back on the site. The "Notes" area of substack seems to have promise as being the best way to replicate the contact I had with several Twitter users whose posts I really enjoyed reading.
I swear I’m the stupidest person ever! I want the notes, I need the notes, but I’m not seeing the notes? I love your example, and I have clicked on everything... hmmmmm??? Technology challenged, always have been always will be! 😁
