This report from NOTUS’ Reese Gorman might shock you — but it shouldn’t:
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has become increasingly vocal in her criticism of the Republican Party and its leadership, particularly in the House, is telling people she wants to run for president in 2028.
Greene has been working on reinventing herself over the past year — and for good reason.
She has confided to colleagues that she wants to run for president, according to four sources familiar with the matter, including one who has spoken with her directly about it.
One source says her conversations have centered around her belief she is “real MAGA and that the others have strayed,” adding that she believes she has “the national donor network to win the primary.”
I’ve been watching MTG very closely for the last few months. And it’s become increasingly clear that something is going on. That she is restless. That she wants more.
Consider:
Greene has been one of the leading voices within the GOP to release the full Jeffrey Epstein investigation files — contra President Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson
Greene has loudly criticized her party’s House leadership for its decision to stay out of Washington even as premiums for the Affordable Care Act are set to soar amid the ongoing government shutdown
Greene blasted Trump for his decision to use U.S. military forces to bomb Iranian nuclear sites
That sort of stuff doesn’t happen by accident. Greene is clearly growing more alienated from where the MAGA movement is going — and she isn’t sitting quietly on the sidelines as it happens.
Need more proof that MTG is trying to re-position herself? In the last month, she had gone on “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “The View” — not exactly safe spaces for MAGA true believers.
And in her appearance on “The View” this week, MTG was downright conciliatory!
“Well, on free speech, I want to say that I think that all of us here are doing a great job of exchanging our ideas and things that we believe in, and we’re doing it in a very professional and kind way and, in my opinion, I think we need more of that in America,” she told the (mostly) liberal hosts. “I really do, and a lot of people wanted me to come on this show and say nasty things and, you know, all of us to fight. They wanted all of us to fight.”
👀
None of this stuff is by accident. While MTG denied any interest in running nationally to NOTUS — after the story published, of course — there is absolutely something going on with her.
And running for president — or at least wanting to run for president — seems like as good an explanation as any.
Could she actually be a serious contender in 2028? I think she rightly assesses that she could raise a bunch of money. But I am not at all sure MTG could build the sort of serious organization — nationally and in early voting states — to compete. Plus, Trump seems set on the idea of either JD Vance or Marco Rubio as his heir — and how Trump goes tends to be how the MAGA base goes.
