1. A MAJOR misconception about Trump
One thing I have heard a lot since Donald Trump won the presidency — and in the 30 days since he has been in the Oval Office — is some version of this: I mean he won the election and he’s pretty popular right now so…
That’s only half right.
Yes, he won the election in convincing fashion. (He won all seven swing states and the popular vote.)
But, no, Trump is not particularly popular.
Two data points to that, uh, point:
A Quinnipiac University national poll released on Wednesday showed 45% approving of the job Trump is doing while 49% disapproved
A Gallup poll released Wednesday had Trump at 45% approval and 51% disapproval.
Now, to be fair, a Morning Consult poll also released Wednesday showed Trump at 50% approval to 47% disapproval.
But even those Morning Consult numbers — which are, at the moment, the best ones out there for the president — suggest that opinion about him is very much divided.
So, why then is there this notion kicking around politics that Trump is popular with the public?
