It began roughly 5 minutes after the TV networks called the Iowa caucuses for Donald Trump on Monday night. The attempt to downplay the scale of his victory.
He only won with 51% of the vote, people tweeted!
Turnout was WAY down, they said!
To which I say:
Look, I get the fact that lots and lots of people don’t like Trump. Ok, they hate him. And are simply unwilling to ever acknowledge when he does something good — in political terms. (I have said before and will say here again: I believe Trump to be an active threat to American democratic norms and ideals.)
But, the arguments that the Iowa caucus results were somehow disappointing to Trump — or a sign that his grip was slipping on the party — are, at best, wish-casting and, at worse, nonsensical.
