Vice President Kamala Harris sat for the most pointed interview of her presidential campaign to date as she answered — and parried — questions from Fox News’ Bret Baier.
It was a critical moment for her campaign in these final weeks — a chance to reach out to loosely-affiliated Republican voters and show them she isn’t as scary as Donald Trump (and Fox News) have portrayed her.
Partisans, of course, insisted that Harris has either bombed and triumphed. (Sidebar: Why does everything in politics always have to be the best or the worst thing EVER? Can’t some things be just, like, ok?)
But, I wanted to go through the actual transcript line by line — and pull out the most important lines from Harris. I did that below.
This is one of a handful of posts I put behind my paywall. These posts take significant time and effort. But going through the words of our presidential candidates (and politicians more generally) is critically important. And I am the only political journalist doing this work!

“Well, I'm glad you raise the issue of immigration, because I agree with you. It is a topic of discussion that people want to rightly have.”
The question Baier asked was how many undocumented immigrants did Harris believe had entered the country since Joe Biden became president. There is a ZERO percent chance Harris was ever going to throw out a number. And away we go!
“But -- but -- Bret, let's just get to the point, OK?”
Baier had interrupted Harris and pressed for a specific number. Again, there is NO way she was ever going to give him one. Better chance of her endorsing Trump!
“The point is that we have a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired.”
This is correct. It’s also a hard argument for Harris to make. Because, of course, she and Biden have been in office for the last 4 years. She wants to make this about the bipartisan immigration bill Trump killed — and he did! — but again, it’s just hard to say the system is broken when you have been in charge of the system for the last 4 years.
“Well, I'm not -- but I'm not finished. I'm not finished.”
“May I finish -- may I finish responding, please?”
There was a LOT of this in the interview. If you like Harris, you will see this as evidence of Baier being rude and interrupting her all the time. If you don’t, you will see Baier doing his job — trying to get her off of her talking points and not let her filibuster.
