Donald Trump isn’t doing all that much this week — which leaves him plenty of time to call into his favorite cable TV shows!
Which is what he did on Wednesday morning; Trump spent time chatting with “Fox and Friends” via phone.
I grabbed the transcript — and went through it line by line. The lines you need to see are below.
I put these “lines”posts behind the paywall because a) they are very labor intensive and b) I am the only person — I think — who is doing the work of going through what Trump and other prominent politicians are actually saying.
It’s important work — what they say is the best indicator of what they’ll do — and I hope you will decide to become a paid subscriber to this newsletter to read the lines in full.
It’s $6 a month or $60 for the year. And, thank you.
To the lines!
“I would say my reaction is I can't believe it. I never thought this was going to be the one that was picked.”
This is Trump’s reaction to Tim Walz’s selection as VP. It was also probably Tim Walz’s initial reaction to Tim Walz’s selection as VP. And away we go!
“I helped him very much during the riots because his house was surrounded by people that were waving an American flag, doesn't sound like very bad people, and he called me and he was very concerned -- very, very concerned that it was going to get out of control. They only had one guard, I guess. It was at the mansion or at his -- his house in some form.”
This is, um, not how Walz remembers this episode. There was a call between Trump and Walz. That much we know for sure. But, Walz insisted that his house was surrounded after Trump tweeted “LIBERATE MINNESOTA” — and that he called the president to call off the dogs. In Walz’s telling, he confronted Trump — telling the then president that he had “brought armed people to my house.”
“He's a very, very liberal man, and he's a shocking pick, and I'm -- I'm thrilled. I could not be more thrilled.”
I actually think Trump is being somewhat honest here. Whether they are right to feel this way or not, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was the VP pick that scared Republicans the most.
“He's probably about the same as Bernie Sanders. He's probably more so than Bernie Sanders.”
Walz’s voting record during his decade-plus in Congress is nowhere near as liberal as Bernie Sanders’ record. Check out these stats from GovTrack.
“This is a ticket that would want this country go -- to go communist immediately, if not sooner.”
Wait. What’s sooner than immediately?
