Late Friday afternoon, Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson held a press conference at Mar-a-Lago to prop up Johnson’s failing speakership talk about election integrity issues.
At the heart of that pitch was a false premise — that “hundreds of thousands” of undocumented immigrants could vote in the fall election. That is simply not born out by facts — as CNN documented here. It is also already illegal.
While the theme of the press conference was election integrity, Trump, as is his wont, talked about a whole lot of other things too. I went through the transcript of his remarks and pulled out the lines you need to see.
“It’s an honor to have you at Mar-a-Lago, my $18 million house on the ocean and the bay.”
Trump is mocking the estimate by a Palm Beach County appraiser that his home (and club) is worth only $18 million. Trump has said that the property could sell for more than $1 billion (with a “b”) dollars. And away we go!
“You have 15 million in. Some are terrorists. They come from jails and prisons and mental institutions and insane asylums and come from all over the world, not just South America, but coming from all over the world.”
Trump has been claiming that 15 million people are in the country illegally for years now. It’s never been clear where he is getting that number. Read this on that. Also, again, there is NO evidence that other countries are purposely sending people from “jails and prisons and mental institutions and insane asylums” to the U.S.
“Venezuela said their crime is down 67% because they have taken the gang leaders and members deposited them very nicely into the United States of America.”
Crime has dropped in Venezuela. But not by 67%. And it’s not at all clear the crime drop is because the country’s criminals are coming to the United States.
“Our country is like a dumping ground and we are going to have it stopped and Biden should close the border immediately.”
“Our country is like a dumping ground.” — The Republican nominee for president
“But we probably have 15 million people and come from places that you don't want to know about and big problems and getting worse.”
Ah yes, the places I don’t want to know about.
