Donald Trump is doing so much talking — and dancing! — these days that it’s sometimes hard to keep up with it all.
But I am committed to documenting as much of what he is saying as possible in these final 21 days of the race.
To that end, I grabbed the transcript of Trump’s interview with Maria Bartiromo, one of his staunchest advocates on Fox News, from Sunday.
I went through the transcript of the interview line by line. The lines you need to see are below.
This is one of a handful of posts I put behind my paywall. These posts take significant time and effort. But going through the words of our presidential candidates (and politicians more generally) is critically important. And I am the only political journalist doing this work!
I hope you consider becoming an investor in what I am building. Not only do you get access to ALL of my content but you get a bunch of other perks including a 15-minute, one-on-one Zoom with me! It’s $6 a month or $60 a year for a subscription.
To the Lines!
“We're leading in all swing states. We're leading mostly in nationals, I think. I'm a believer in polls. Some of them are fake, like a lot of writers.”
Man, he just jumped right in there with an epic stream-of-consciousness answer! Mid-season form! And away we go!
“But I'm a believer in polls, and we're leading in just about every swing state. I think we're leading now in every swing state.”
[narrator voice] He is not.
“And she can't talk. There's something wrong with the candidate, but I will take it.”
He says this in every election. In 2016, he insinuated something was terribly wrong with Hillary Clinton. Did the same against Joe Biden — in 2020 and 2024. And now is doing it against Kamala Harris.
“Well, I think you're going to have -- I think we're going to have a lot of votes. We have something sort of special going on.”
The question Trump was asked? What is your message to undecided voters? Good times. Gooooooood times.
“Inflation is a massive word.”
I mean it’s no “antidisestablishmentarianism” but sure…
“But I almost think that, when they see millions of people coming into our country, 13,099 murderers, many of them murdered more than one person, when they see that, I actually think that that's -- I think the border is a bigger issue than even the economy.”
Trump’s claim that there are 13,000 migrants who have committed murder on the loose in the United States is laughably false.
“We had the best economy in history. We had the best job numbers in history. And we had the best border in history.”
None of these things are true. Here’s the economy fact check. And the jobs numbers fact check. And I don’t even know how you would fact check the claim about having the “best border in history.”
“Putin would never have gone into Ukraine. October 7 would have never happened. And you know what else? Inflation wouldn't have happened. Inflation would have never happened.”
It’s obviously impossible to disprove a hypothetical. But Hamas wouldn’t have attacked Israel if Trump was president? They take orders from Trump?
“No, no, it came out from there. And everybody knew it. And it was released from them.”
Here Trump doubles down on his false claim that FEMA money went to undocumented immigrants. This is simply untrue.
“Look, it's the worst president and the worst vice president in the history of our country.”
