Donald Trump called into CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Monday morning to, um, chat. He was interviewed by CNBC’s Joe Kernan.
Because I think it is vitally important to document what the de facto Republican nominee says — because it’s the best indicator of what he will do — I went through the transcript of the interview (helpfully provided by CNBC!) and pulled out the lines you need to see. They’re below.
A quick word before we get to it. This newsletter is my pride and joy. I love the community we are building. But it takes a LOT of time and effort. And I need you all to invest in it so that I can keep doing it! Right now it’s only $5 a month or $50 for the year (or you can become a “founding member” for $240!). That price is going up SOON. So act now to lock in the lowest rate for the lifetime of your subscription!
Ok, pitch over! To the lines!
“Well, I heard a very angry man who’s losing badly in the polls, who's willing to weaponize government like has never taken place in this country.”
Donald Trump on Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech. Also, the Real Clear Politics polling average has Trump ahead by less than 2 points over Biden. And away we go!
“It has taken place in third world countries, quite often actually and they will use the Justice Department to sue opponents like me, because I'm his only opponent other than life, life itself.”
Wait, so, “life itself” is an enemy of Biden’s? What does this mean? Like that he is old?
“I assume he's going to be the candidate. I think it probably maybe it was a terrible performance, but I think it was probably good enough to get him over the heap, to get him over the, you know, the barrier as to whether or not he's going to be their, their nominee.”
The “probably maybe” is amazing. Also, Trump says in one breath it was a “terrible performance” by Biden and in the next that the SOTU speech was probably good enough to keep him as the Democratic nominee for president. Um….
“I was saying that’s been it for a long time.”
“Starts off by talking about Snickers, you don't want to really talk about Snickers even though it's true that they put a little bit less than a bag but you have you have more interesting examples of inflation and other things that he was trying to point out than that.”
Trump hits Biden for talking about Snickers and shrinkflation. Then admits there is Snickers shrinkflation! Amazing!
