Like everything with Donald Trump, his speech following his convincing win in the Iowa caucuses on Monday night was a subject of some controversy.
MSNBC didn’t broadcast the speech at all. “There is a cost to us, as a news organization of knowingly broadcasting untrue things,” explained MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “That is a fundamental truth of our business and who we are.”
CNN ran the first bit of the speech, but then pulled away as Trump started into his now-familiar patter of falsehoods. “Under my voice, you hear him repeating his anti-immigrant rhetoric,” said anchor Jake Tapper.
Trump and his allies — including Fox News — insisted that he was being censored by the networks. And the former president promised retribution.
“Last night, it was amazing. NBC and CNN refused to air my victory speech—think of it— because they are crooked, they’re dishonest and, frankly, they should have their licenses or whatever they have taken away,” Trump told a New Hampshire audience on Tuesday night.
Given the controversy, I thought it made sense to go through Trump’s WHOLE Iowa speech — line by line. I did so below.
“And I really think this is time now for everybody, our country, to come together.”
Trump the uniter is back! (For now.) And away we go!
“It would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world and straighten out the problems and straighten out all of the death and destruction that we're witnessing that's practically never been like this.”
“Death and destruction.”
“We have so many Senators. If I go through every name, we'll be here all night, and everybody's going to get angry at me.”
With Ted Cruz’s endorsement of Trump on Tuesday might, a majority (25 of 49) Republican Senators have formally backed the former president’s candidacy.
“I want to congratulate Ron and Nikki for having a good time together. We're all having a good time together.”
So, so weird.
“And I see Kari Lake. Congratulations, Kari.”
Why is Trump congratulating Kari Lake? Literally no idea.
