Over the weekend, Donald Trump traveled to Erie, Pennsylvania to rally support in that critical swing state with just over 5 weeks left before election day.
He delivered a dark and ominous speech — yes, even more than usual — to the attendees.
I went through the whole thing — line by line. (Special thanks, as always, to my friends at the Listening Post for the transcript.)
The stuff you need to see is below.
This is one of a handful of posts I put behind my paywall. These posts take significant time and effort. But going through the words of our presidential candidates (and politicians more generally) is critically important. And I am the only political journalist doing this work!

To the lines!
“You know, we did great, as you know, in 2016. We did much better in 2020. Bad things happened there.”
He’s really putting the 2020 election in the rearview mirror! And away we go!
“Before we begin, I'd like to send my love and prayers to the families of those who have died. A lot of death. And all of those who are displaced and suffering in the wake of the hurricane's destruction in the South, especially in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and, in particular, Western North Carolina, took a tremendous hit.”
“A lot of death.”
“And Joe Biden is in Delaware sleeping right now in one of his many estates.
One of his many estates. How did he get so many houses?”
Joe Biden owns two homes — both in Delaware. Also, is Trump aware that Biden is not the Democratic nominee anymore?
“This is — if we win Pennsylvania, we win.”
“But we were at the Alabama-Georgia game yesterday. Did you see it? So, just to show — because this is a poll, too, right? And I walked in. It must be my looks. Because the place went stone-cold crazy.”
First: “It must be my looks.” Second: Trump has never grasped that people cheering for him is not, in fact, a poll.
“But this is a poll. I mean, that's a poll. It's all a poll.”
All the world’s a poll!
“People are tired of her act, her lying. She's a liar, and they're tired of it.”
“Trump’s false or misleading claims total 30,573 over 4 years” — Washington Post
“We're going to win. We're going to lots of different things.”
A lot of things, eh?
“I think it's going to be the most important election of them all. I mean, they had some pretty good ones, right? Long time ago, they had some pretty good ones.”
Donald Trump, election historian
“When I told the president of Mexico, you know, all everybody's staying in Mexico. No, no, we wouldn't do that. I said, yes, you will. Because if you don't, we're going to tariff your cars at 150 percent, and that's going to be the end of that. Sir, we'd love to do that.”
