Donald Trump reunited with a former love on Wednesday night, appearing at a Fox News sponsored town hall in Iowa just days before the state’s critical caucuses.
I didn’t watch — I was mostly keeping an eye on the CNN debate between Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis (my analysis of that is here) — but I did get my hands on the transcript of the event.
I went through it. Every word. And pulled out the lines you need to see. They’re below.
“I have polls that show me leading by tremendous amount in New Hampshire and a lot in Iowa. And nationwide, we're leading by almost 60 points. So, I'm not exactly worried about it.”
He’s (mostly) right. Polls show him winning Iowa overwhelmingly. Ditto nationally. But, New Hampshire is definitely closer (and getting even closer) between Trump and Nikki Haley. But he’s not worried! And away we go!
“I understand New Hampshire very well. I won it twice and did very well with New Hampshire.”
Um, what? Trump DID win the New Hampshire primary in 2016 — by 20 points. But there was no New Hampshire primary (Trump was unopposed for the nomination) in 2020. Also, he lost the state to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
“I love the people, they love me, I think.”
“We fell in love.” — Trump on Kim Jong Un
“I brought some polls if you want to see them, you know, just in case.”
Because of course he did.
“New Hampshire is interesting. It's a great place, a great state, unbelievable people. But they allow independents and Democrats to vote in the Republican primary. You say, what's that all about?”
New Hampshire DOES have an open primary system — meaning that voters can vote in either party primary.
