Seeking to stave off a building Democratic wave in the midterms, House Republicans gathered at Donald Trump’s Doral Resort — of course! — for their annual retreat on Monday.
The president addressed the assembled Members insisting, in the words of Bob Marley, everything is going to be alright.
I went through his speech line by line and picked out the quotes from Trump you need to see. They’re below.
I am the only reporter going through Trump’s words forensically every day/week/month. If you value that sort of close examination of what Trump says — as well as fact-checking, context and some humor — I hope you become a paid subscriber today!
To the Lines!
“I don't know if we've done -- I think we've done. I think we had the best first year of any president ever. And that includes you.”
Best. Ever. And away we go!
“So, with your help and hard work, we're making America great again and we're doing it much faster than we thought. And it's better stronger and our country is doing really well. I mean at a level that nobody thought.”
“Trump job approval sinks in new poll” — The Hill, 3/9/26
“We took a little excursion because we felt we had to do that to get rid of some evil, and I think you'll see it's going to be a short-term excursion.”
Starting war with Iran = “short-term excursion”
“How good is our military, right? Amazing. How good? Short-term. Short term.”
“I said unconditional … It’s if they surrender, or if there is nobody around to surrender, but they're rendered useless in terms of military.” — Donald Trump on when the war in Iran will end, March 7, 2026
“When they don't cry, when they have no tears or any sign of tears, this is not a good sign of a great marriage. But he must have a great marriage because she was, really, she was just devastated. She was going to lose her guy, but it worked out.”
Trump is talking about the reaction of Steve Scalise’s wife when the House Majority Leader was shot and nearly killed at a baseball practice in 2017. And, apparently, Trump has lots of experiences with wives who, on their husbands’ death beds, are not upset. So, yeah.
