Donald Trump’s change-the-story tour landed in North Carolina on Wednesday where he was set to give an address on economic policy.
Trump snuck in a few lines about economic policy amid his usual airing of grievances, lying and score-settling.
Thanks to the Listening Post (an amazing site), I got the transcript and went through it line by line.
The lines you need to see are below.
I put these “lines” posts behind the paywall because a) they are very labor intensive and b) I am the only person — I think — who is doing the work of going through what Trump and other prominent politicians are actually saying.
It’s important work — what they say is the best indicator of what they’ll do — and I hope you will decide to become a paid subscriber to this newsletter to read the lines in full.
It’s $6 a month or $60 for the year. And, thank you.

“And by the way, we have some very good polls coming out today, I just heard, despite all of the fake publicity about this radical left person from San Francisco.”
A poll came out Wednesday that showed Kamala Harris at 48% to Trump’s 47% in North Carolina. So, yeah. And away we go!
“No, we have some very good polls coming out. So that's good.”
“He said, I'm only in politics for you, sir.”
“Okay, we're way up here. We got to make sure everyone gets out and votes, but we're way up.”
Harris 48%
Trump 47%
“We're going to win back the White House at a historic landslide.”
[narrator voice] “We” are not. If Trump wins, it is very likely to be quite close.
“This is like you have two fighters, and one guy is losing. You say, come on out, let's put in another one.”
And now they're putting her on the covers of Time magazine with an artist sketch. They don't use a picture. They use an artist sketch. I want to use that artist. I want to find that artist. I like him very much.”
No one — and I mean NO ONE — cares more about who’s on the cover of a weekly news magazine than Trump. It’s yet another sign of how all his cultural reference points are stuck in the 80s — when being on the cover of a magazine really mattered.
“But that's what they do, and it's their own form of — it's just another — I guess, relatively, it's a minor form of cheating by comparison to what they really do, right?”
To be clear: Joe Biden leaving the race and Kamala Harris stepping in was entirely legal. Unorthodox but well within the rules.
“Now, this is a little bit different day because this isn't around. This is we're talking about a thing called the economy. They wanted to do a speech on the economy.”
“They wanted to do a speech on the economy.” Incredible. Trump just saying the quiet part out loud. Like always.
“So we're doing this as an intellectual speech. You're all intellectuals today.”
Spoiler alert: This is the same speech he always gives!
