Chris, you say that you're not a Trump hater. Would he have to come after you personally for you to hate the guy? I hate him simply for what he's doing to our country. It's bad for all of us, whether you voted for him or not (or not at all).
On a lighter note, Jimmy Kimmel got off a great line last night in response to Trump's latest tweet regarding the return of his show:
Kimmel said, "You can't believe I got my job back? I can't believe YOU got your job back! So now we're even."
The other word that comes to my mind, constantly, is unprofessional. The whole administration reeks of unprofessionalism. They way they act, the way they speak to the press or to members of Congress makes it hard to believe that any of them have ever held a real job before. Trump sets the tone and they compete to see who can be the most like him.
I feel compelled to ask, "Why not? Why the bloody hell not?" After the literally thousands of cruel, megalomaniacal, destructive, dangerous, vindictive, hateful, vicious, and stupid things he's said AND done, whether personally or through his circus troupe of carefully chosen and vetted lickspittles, how is it that a decent, ethical, astute, democracy-supporting observer like yourself can be anything other than a Trump hater?
I mean this question in all seriousness, Chris. Perhaps it has to do with your definition of hate -- which I would understand, though in this particular case I really can't claim to draw a line for myself at that awful emotion. But the way you use the term, it doesn't seem to mean literal hate, but rather someone who has made up his mind about Trump negatively and permanently. Are you still holding out, then, some kind of fond hope that he will someday mend his ways and stop being the monster that he seems more thrilled to be every day?
I suppose anything is possible. But I don't think it does any good at this point to hold oneself aloof in any way from a full-bore acknowledgement of who Trump is and what a nightmare he is bringing upon us. Reserving even the most extreme judgment, given the record and the trend, feels forced. I'm no fan of hatred, per se, but I wouldn't be honest with myself if I didn't own that I hate Trump with a passion such as I have never permitted myself to feel for any other fellow human, living or dead.
I appreciate your framing on this. This, in itself, does not matter. But it speaks to a complete lack of care and respect for the power of the office. It reminded me again that this administration has no conception of the Executive Branch as it existed before or will exist after. There is no sense of holding something in a state of trust - our trust. It is only "Ooo, I've got a toy to play with." Presidents have often treated politics like some game, but never this thoroughly.
