On Sunday, the New York Times ran a massive piece detailing all of the ways that the various indictments against Donald Trump have helped his political standing in the 2024 Republican presidential race.
There’s a lot of good stuff in it but one quote, from a Trump supporter, stood out to me.
Here it is:
For many of Mr. Trump’s supporters, the details of each successive indictment have blended together into a generic attack on the former president, creating something of a background noise they are largely tuning out.
“The indictments have no impact on my support for Trump,” said Sean Roh, 39, who described himself as a reluctant Trump supporter from Lynnwood, Wash. “In the past I’d followed them in the news, but now I don’t care to read the details.”
I think that quote provides tremendous insight into why these three indictments — with a fourth seemingly coming out of Georgia this week — haven’t hurt him with even those Republican voters who are only marginally for him.
I call it the Montgomery Burns theory.
