It’s hard to imagine the last month going any better for former President Donald Trump.
Joe Biden bombed in the first debate, leading to weeks of speculation about whether he was too old to run again — and Biden’s ultimate decision over the weekend to step aside.
Trump was nearly assassinated at a rally in Pennsylvania, turning him into a near-Messianic figure for many within his base. And then Republicans held their convention, a four-day lovefest for the former president.
Democrats in disarray! Republicans unified!
You might think that Trump was running away with the race. And yet, he is most definitely not.
A Quinnipiac poll released after Vice President Kamala Harris entered the presidential race shows Trump at 49% to 47% for her — a statistical dead heat.
And Trump’s approval numbers — despite, well, everything, are still stuck in the low 40s, according to 538.
Does all of this mean Trump will lose? Nope! He is still the favorite today. But it suggests that Democrats (and Harris) remain very much in the game even though they have just lived through an utterly disastrous political month.
