In the wake of the campaign collapse of Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong in Tuesday’s Wisconsin gubernatorial primary, I spent 40 minutes Wednesday morning talking to Matt Bennett, the executive vice president for public affairs at Third Way, a centrist Democratic think tank strongly opposed to the rise of the DSA.
And Bennett came with a very blunt message for his party: “We want the Democratic party to wake the hell up” to the danger posed by the Democratic Socialists of America, he told me.
Bennett painted the ongoing fight within the Democratic party as “existential,” adding of the DSA:
They’re not liberal Democrats. They’re people that are seeking to fundamentally change the Democratic Party, to actually to kill the Democratic Party and reinvent something new in its place. And the things that they believe in and are running on are not liberal. They are radical.
