John Darnielle may be the most prolific man in rock music. His band — The Mountain Goats — has released 22(!) albums since 1994. (The New York Times recently published a useful starter guide to the band; my favorite album is “Beat the Champ”; it’s about professional wrestling.)
Darnielle has created so much music that he has characters that run through albums — and decades. “Jenny” is one of them. And she takes center stage in the new Mountain Goats record “Jenny from Thebes.” (The new album is actually a sequel to 2002’s “All Hail West Texas.”)
Here’s a taste of the sound on the new album — “Murder at the 18th St. Garage”:
There’s a few more Darnielle tunes from the new album on this week’s playlist.
