What went wrong — and how to fix it?
A live conversation with Steve Schmidt about the 2024 election and how we move forward from here
The second after Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election, the Democratic blame game started.
Kamala Harris’ people blamed Joe Biden. The Biden people blamed Nancy Pelosi for pushing him out. Pelosi blamed the lack of an open primary process.
Here’s what it looked like:
What I’ve heard very little of from the mainstream media, however, is how do Democrats move forward from here? Who leads the charge against Trump? Who tries to position the party in a way it can win in 2026 and, critically, 2028? What issues do Democrats need to start talking more about — and what issues do they need to talk less about?
My friend and I are hosting a live video in the Substack app on Wednesday at 8pm ET to try to answer some (all?) of those questions. We hope you’ll join us and ask your questions in the live video chat.
To join the conversation, you’ll need to download the Substack iPhone or Android app. Go ahead and do that by clicking here. This event is open for ALL subscribers.
If you are having any issues downloading the Substack app, follow the steps below:
Go to the Apple or Android app store on your mobile device and search for Substack. Alternatively, you can click this link on your mobile device to get there.
Download the Substack app.
Sign in with the email address that you use for Substack—the one my newsletters are sent to you at.
To finish logging in, Substack will send a verification email to your mobile device. All you have to do is open your email app on your phone, locate the email from Substack with the subject line “Finish signing in to Substack,” and you’re almost there. Tap the orange button in that email to finish logging into the app.
If you’re new to the app, you’ll go through Substack’s regular onboarding process. This takes a few minutes but is simple to complete. You’ll probably want to get this up and running this morning if you don’t have the app already, or do it at least 15 minutes before we go live.
Once you’ve successfully logged in, you’ll land on the app’s home screen. When I am live, the first “post” at the top of your app will be my live video. All you need to do is click on this to join the livestream. Below is an example of what the app looked like when Chris Best, Substack’s CEO, did a live video.
Note: If you don’t see me in your app, I probably haven’t gone live yet. Just wait a few minutes and I will show up. If for some reason I am not showing up in your app, use the search icon to search for
. You can join the live video from there too.
The blame game never ends. Just like everything else in politics. It's part of one big loop. Two years ago the GOP was pointing fingers at each other for not having a red wave. Four years ago Trump had his meltdown. The blame game will happen again in two and four years. Always a bunch of questions with no real answers.
Americans are rushing to stockpile abortion medication. High profile Democrats are fearful of retribution. Tariffs will in all likelihood wreak havoc on an economy that is much better than Republicans believe.
I just need to take a break from this for a while. I will continue to follow you, Chris, as I have for quite some time, but I am struggling with political overload right now. I'm so disgusted and fearful that it threatens to overwhelm me.
Good luck with the column and videos!
