Why Republicans are 'scared shitless' of Trump's big primetime speech 💩

My weekly conversation with Matt Lewis!

I left legacy media to build something different: independent, honest political analysis with no corporate or partisan agenda.

Tonight at 9 pm eastern, President Donald Trump will deliver a speech that — we think — will be all about, er, election integrity.

“Trump will deliver a major address to the nation on protecting the integrity of our elections,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Politico. “We encourage every American to watch the President’s speech, which is fully supported by everyone on his team, rather than reading pure speculation from the media.”

For Trump’s part, he has said the speech “doesn't get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country,” adding: “We'll be discussing other things too. But it's going to be a very big announcement.”

VERY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

All of the reporting about what Trump will say seems to indicate that there will be a) some re-litigation of already-settled false claims about the 2020 election and b) a(nother) call for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act.

If that reporting is accurate, this is TERRIBLE news for Republicans trying to hold onto the House and Senate majorities.

Why? Because swing voters could care less about the 2020 election amid rising gas prices (again) and a broader affordability crisis in the country. Every poll shows that the economy and inflation and costs are the issues on voters’ minds. Going back six years to argue about how you ackshually won is just plain dumb.

The speech Trump should give tonight would focus on peoples’ concerns about affordability — and how the One Big Beautiful Bill (and the housing measure that just became law without Trump’s signature) will effectively address those worries.

Here’s one former Trump White House official:

Talking about the SAVE Act, which is not going to pass, or election integrity, which just brings up memories of 2020 — these are not winning issues. And it’s not helpful for Republicans to retain their majorities. We experienced this in 2022.

Then there’s the prospect of Trump going WAY off script — veering into the sort of conspiracy fever swamps about what happened in 2020 that will turn off all non-MAGA voters.

Here’s a GOP operative talking to Politico about that prospect: “The people I talk to are scared shitless. It’s not scared shitless about the text of what he’s going to say, it’s, what does he add to the text?”

My friend Matt Lewis and I talked ALL about Trump’s speech in the video above. We also chatted about the new Decision Desk HQ election forecast, Democrats’ Michigan Senate problem, Matt’s favorite Joan Didion book and my search for the best, lesser-known Stephen King novels!
