We should never be surprised when a Republican “leader” endorses Trump. They have already showed themselves to be moral cowards, and they know that if they DON’T support Trump, their Trumpist constituents will turn against them and they may even face threats to their personal safety. The bigger surprise is a Cheney or a Kinzinger who calls bullshit. The others are barely worth discussing. Entirely predictable..

I agree with you Cathlyn. Most of the Republican leaders are going to eventually line up behind Trump. Are we going to start commenting and analyzing each and every one of then when they do? I hope not. Otherwise , we will continue to get a more frequent doses of Trump, Trump and Trump than we are already getting in this forum. It only matters when people like senator Romney, Liz Cheney and Kitzinger endorse him.

From where I am sitting I start to wonder how unaware of reality Lee is if he really stands behind those comments. We have had 3 years of improvement in most sectors that he treats as insignificant because a Democrat was president while it happened but would be showering praises if it had been a Republican. When did the GOP ever get into office and fix all the problems in 4 years? Never. So when you spread insincere comments like these why should the voters trust you?

This is how we lose our democracy, when people like Lee who know better but refuse to do the right thing.

Senator Lee is a spineless coward, like so many others in his party.

Lisa Murkowski may be one of the last Republican office holders in Congress who DOES possess a spine.

I re-read this multiple times:

“We can get into the fact that he accused my best friend’s father of conspiring to kill JFK. ..."

That is Ted Cruz. It implies that Ted Cruz is his *best friend*. That is so messed up that I just got nothing to respond besides "wow"

A true profile in courage.

Reminds me of Al Franken on Cruz. Maybe Lee is held in the same “high regard” so they stick together.

"I like Ted Cruz more than most of my other colleagues like Ted Cruz. And I hate Ted Cruz."

Chris, Sen. Mike Lee's series of actions between the Nov. 2020 election and Jan. 6 clearly indicated that he'd overcome all of his 2016 objections and become as enthusuastic a supporter of Trump as Sen. Lindsey Graham. Lee texted many times to Mark Meadows requesting directions about how he could aid objections to electoral slates on Jan. 6. Lee is fully in the tank as a rubber stamp for Trump.

It has gotten physically painful to watch people with whom I might disagree politically, but who I thought were honorable people, succumb to partisanship and fear of a lifelong common criminal and now a traitor to the country. How can they look at themselves in the mirror and not see a dishonorable coward? How do they sleep at night?

Power. Lee is playing the hand likely to gain him the most power. These days, he can change his allegiances at will with seemingly no harm to him at the ballot box. And fear. Lee is a castrated public figure who wishes to curry favor with the potential dear leader.

None of this makes any sense to me. I don’t know why we’re still captive to this horrible man after EIGHT YEARS of this that included: vilifying the press, shaking down world leaders and the secret service from the WH, simpering for and wooing dictators, a completely appalling COVID response that left 600,000 Americans dead (“They’re dying! It is what it is!”), degrading our standing on the world stage, flushing documents down the toilet, instigating an insurrection, the list goes on and on and on.

What would happen if anyone acted like this ON THE JOB? You think it would result in a huge memory hole and a PROMOTION? What if our kids acted like this at school? SMFH.

And now one of the two political parties entirely has bowed down and is genuflecting on the daily, selling out the American public and democracy in service to this dude. Democrats can’t seem to articulate anything, and so many voters are unhappy because “Biden looks old”.

If we get Trump in the WH again, we are going to deserve it. And he isn’t going to leave. It’s over. The US will have sunk completely to the bottom.

Wait, wait, is this the very same Ted Cruz who stole the Iowa Caucus from t-Rump 2016?

Wait, wait, is this also the same Ted Cruz who has a wife named Heidi who t-Rump suggested she was unattractive, and then Ted Cruz called t-Rump a "sniveling coward"?

There is no way this could be the same Ted Cruz, right?

If only the mean tweets...how about Trump's wildly crazy, unhinged psychotic and threatening comments he makes on Truth Social?? He rants like a lunatic. Truly scary.

Full disclosure here. Based Mike Lee blocked me on Twitter for reminding him about the 2016 floor fight and that he used to be a serious person.

But I was persuaded by Allahpundit/Nick Catoggio's piece in The Dispatch where he makes the case that Lee us not a cynic, but a true convert to Trumpism. I think that despite his prior serious Constitutional scholarship, he willingly drank the Kool aid and there's no going back. He's not calculating. He has brain worms. That's how his endorsement makes sense (and also explains his sharing of Russian propaganda, vaccine conspiracies, and similar lunacy).

I have to disagree on the mean tweets. What they demonstrate is that Trump cares more about his enablers liking his tweets than he does about governing. The President should be above this and should not be focused on tweeting, er x-ing, a demeaning tweet at 3AM while on the pooper. Unfiltered access to social media by the President is a horrible idea.

Chris,

It's important that you note this event, but who cares what the "Constitution-carrying" hypocrite thinks.

Lee fashions himself a protector of the Constitution, yet rationalizes support for the Wannabe Dictator inspite of his "mean tweets" and not for Trump's Constitution-busting babblings.

Is Mike Lee one of the folks in Congress that Tim Burchett is talking about? Following the old Peggy Noonan dictum, I believe it would be irresponsible not to speculate.
