I beg to differ on the idea that the factors which propelled Suozzi to victory don’t exist in the 2024 general. We have a disgraced , serial liar who has a raucous but small ardent majority running against a moderate fella with a fairly successful resumé. We have the coffers of the Republican Party sucked dry by one candidate, leaving the rest dependent on individual donors and help from the PACs of the likes of Mitch McConnell. And..,.we have an electorate exhausted by the antics of a Party gone rogue, tired of having no problems solved while the folks they’ve elected engage in culture wars and posturing. Although the media makes a big deal out of Biden’s age…sentient Americans just want Donald J Trump off the national stage along with his partisan pinocchios. We know that Biden can do it, and we’ll elect a Democratic Congress to help him.

Chris, I find it remarkable that no one is pointing out that it is GOP governors busing migrants to NYC and dumping them. They are exacerbating the problem, then campaigning on the same problem that they are amplifying. That is next level cynicism.

True, but their antics are attracting attention, and the Dem mayors and governors are protesting and asking the federal government for money to help them with the situation, which just goes to prove the GOP governors' point. It's crude, but it's very effective.

Thanks for the Trump bleat, Chris. Hadn’t seen that. If he wants me to love him, he can go the F away. I’d definitely love that.

Suozzi made sure to point out the hypocrisy of Republicans kvetching about the border and blocking any solutions to it to improve Trump’s and their election chances.

I’m thinking hopefully that the impeachment in the Senate of Mayorkas is going to be a very nice opportunity to inform the whole country about it. Nice briar patch. I saw somewhere that Marge is going to be one of the impeachment managers. Could God really be that good to us?

“ Their aging presidential candidate had been credibly accused of having major memory problems.”

Chris, a partisan hack without a medical or psychology degree is incapable of making “credible” accusations about the president’s memory. I know it makes for a better horse race narrative but reject the tendency to give credibility to these claims as if they somehow were of equal weight to the very observable evidence of Trump’s inclination to fascism and self-delusion.

I don't know the basis for Chris describing the charge as CREDIBLE. I guess that is his(Chris) OPINION and no one is obliged to believe it.

I will agree with Mark that Hur is definitely a “partisan hack” and his hit job, based upon anecdotal information taken out of context (Biden had just returned from emergency diplomacy in Israel, after the Hamas attack, etc), may not be “credible” in terms of his accusations.

That said, Dr., there is absolutely NO question that concerns about Biden’s age and memory are indeed VERY credible, and to say that those concerns aren’t reasonable is being like an ostrich and hiding your head in the sand. Just because YOU’RE not willing to see it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!

Don’t get me wrong: I appreciate your unflinching support of President Biden and your overwhelmingly optimistic perspective. Sure, the media take the easy narrative of the horse race (“If It Bleeds, It Leads”) and are doing Americans a disservice when they do, and one has to be careful about polls, given the dearth of quality non-partisan polls with large sample sizes, but we still need to be clearheaded and open eyed about the work ahead.

It’s going to be a battle and Joe will not “easily win” without every one of us putting out the maximum effort, and acting as if the future of American democracy hinges upon it. And it does.

Stephen Colbert had a bit on his show last night. A reporter asked a woman about the election and she said she was voting for Mazi because she wants to get tough on crime. The woman then said "Democracy? That's done." Crime is the real issue!

Mazi Pilip was a terrible candidate. For all the talk of the vaunted Nassau County Republican machine, it's telling she was the best person they could get. She's not even a Republican!

But she didn't seem to have a firm grasp on the issues, barely did any campaigning and shunned press interviews, while Suozzi was everywhere.

Yup. Candidates matter!

Expand full comment

Oh yes, candidate matter and that's why the Republicans are taking a MASSIVE risk in nominating Trump because Biden is going to beat him in November.

The House capitulating to Trump/MAGA re border security should be a major talking point for Democrats going forward.

Republicans, and their RWM enablers, can scream 24/7 about the flaws in the plan, but there is no denying that it would have been better than the nothing we are getting from Trump and Johnson.

(Imagine a world where the Democrat's outfox the Republicans and turn the tables on border security. Dare we dream?)

I'm glad Suozzi won, but did the Republicans even try to hold on to this seat? Did anyone else find it odd that the GOP candidate was a female of color, an immigrant and a former Democrat to boot? Maybe some of the Republican voters were confused and voted for the older white guy out of habit.

They picked someone who was, um, not their best candidate.

Given her background in the IDF, it almost feels like they picked her to show they were the most staunchly pro-Israel party. But they picked her in December, back when Israel felt more like the faces in the conflict, when now, I think public support is quickly eroding.

(I realize pro wrestling terminology is not the best way to summarize the conflict in the Middle East, but work with me here)

Another takeaway from this election is that, again, the polls were way wrong. According to the polls the race was supposed to be close. It was not. So let’s not be too certain that Trump is as strong a favorite as some pundits would have us believe.

"It’s a miserable path ahead for Johnson. And Tuesday night made it that much more miserable."

Maybe, but Johnson isn't really interested in passing legislation, just *blocking* anything -- like the border deal or Ukraine aid -- that would work in Biden's favor. For that purpose, the House GOP seems perfectly united and has enough votes to prevail. It's Mission Chaos and Breakdown -- and I think Mike Johnson is smiling.

Chris - thanks so much for this - helps put in perspective the election for those is us not in the area or not specifically dialed into this race.

Was interested in your reaction to Rep. Moskowitz calling Trump the now Speaker of the House - should this moniker catch on (due to Trump’s actions to kill the border compromise), and could this be a negative for Trump if it does, or will it just stroke his ego?

On the special election win by the Democrats yesterday, everyone has their OPINIONS AND NARRATIVES as to what the win means in November Presidential election. Everyone tries to spin the win to advance their parochial interest. Buy the facts are the facts. Democrats won the election period. And they deserve to celebrate however they want. And to those who want to make us believe this doesn't mean great tidings for Biden in 2024, I disagree but like I said above, that opinion may make you happy but it doesn't make it true. Look, the Democrats have won special elections after special elections and after special elections throughout the country, from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin to NewYork and guess what in swing suburban districts where the November election will be fought and won. These naysayers want us to continue to believe their phony polls of registered and some likely voters and not believe the REAL VOTERS. They can continue to live in their polls bubble while they continue to loose. I agree with Simon Rosenberg and Nikki Haley you quoted above. After all, Rosenberg predicted NO RED WAVE in 2022 and he was right. No Republican Red wave ever materialised. In November 2024, Biden will win again period.

Hoping that as we turn into the general election, these things propel Biden. It will all be excellent talking points for the democrats, between the faux impeachment, the border, MTG, etc., it’s all a disgrace.

what if this was "spun" as yet another stolen election, just like 2016 (iowa and general popular vote), 2020 (which Trump claimed to have carried all 50 states), etc?
