If people aren't excited, and by excited I mean terrified, about this race, it says more about the idiocy of the electorate than anything else. I'm 54, in PA. I sent money to Joe in the primaries and I'm sending him money now. And frankly, if you want to quibble about his age or policy as opposed to a FASCIST FUCKING DICTATORSHIP, I don't know what to do for you.

Well said, Markus!

Folks should indeed be terrified!

I'll excuse your penultimate paragraph, the one in which you downplayed Trump's attempts to contest a 2024 election because he “doesn’t have his hands on any of the levers of government power,” because that changed yesterday. The fact that the new speaker of the House is one of the key players in the 2021 attempted coup should worry us all.

Well written, Chris!

I agree with your predictions: Joe Biden will win; Trump will say the election was rigged and fraudulent; and he’ll run again in 2028, though I wonder if the Party will come to their senses and realize that they do nothing but lose (or, at the very least, consistently underperform) with Trump. I won’t bet my mortgage either, but if Trump does win, we’ll have to seriously consider paying off that mortgage, selling our home in Los Angeles, and retiring outside the US. There’s a lot of British ex-pats in the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, and it’s looking pretty attractive, given the US$ and its strength against the €.

One last point: the article’s subheading. “In 2024, America will elect a president nobody wants”. I believe that these sorts of synopsis subheadings are the choice of the editor, and not necessarily you, but I just can’t agree. There are a LOT of us that are perfectly happy to vote for Joe Biden, knowing “his age” and the media’s constant story that is just pushing more and more people to parrot that line (just like in 2016, when the MSM gave Trump $1B+ in free advertising, they’re helping to “sell” that story now to Trump’s advantage, even though it’s obvious to any of us that are being observant that Trump is showing very serious cognitive decline...).

It’s more than just “Anyone-But-Trump”! Biden has done a phenomenal job and his administration would be considered a massive success in any other times than ours.

And the fear and hatred of what Trump’s done to America, and the extreme motivation of that to push everyone to vote, cannot be underestimated.

I know it’s not really the focus of the piece but watching from the UK I have to say the Biden has run probably the most impactful first term presidency of my lifetime (I’m 50). It seems bizarre that he doesn’t get more credit for it.

I saw your prediction Chris, and agree, Biden will squeak out a win.

That said, Trump will be a very old 82 year old in 2028. My prediction, either a new wave of COVID does him in, or his junk food diet of KFC and McDonalds. Not to mention, his obesity; leaving diabetes’s to either kill him, or render him impotent.

On the other hand, perhaps he’ll be rotting in jail after all his appeals are exhausted from four convictions, or we get lucky and he just fades into the abyss.

Your article is well reasoned and well written - thanks for sharing.

I still think when the world hears the testimony in the trials which take place before the election, and especially if Trump testifies at all like he did yesterday (where he was found “not credible” when he lied on the stand), the results will not be as close.

But, I would not bet my mortgage on either prediction - yours or mine.

Thank you

I would bet your mortgage since I have nothing to lose.

When the world hears tRump's testimony it will just confirm what they already know. When MAGAtland hears tRump's testimony it will first be fed through the FauxNoise/InfoXLax/MAGAVision news filter and then their personal their cognitive dissonance filter will kick in and they'll deny their own ears and continue to exist in their own reality.

And to reinforce that, after his testimony tRump will be met by a wall of microphones while leaving the court where he'll directly contradict everything that he said in court while under oath and that's what MAGATV will air.

Great article! Thanks! There are several key factors that will play into the election and encourage people to register to vote, in my opinion. Abortion and reproductive health rights, etc. will prompt more people of influence to energize the nation. I don’t believe there are enough undecided people who will choose Trump. I believe you mentioned that his supporters are pretty much set. I’m a bit nervous about the reaction of Trump’s supporters when he loses. And, actually when the first conviction happens as well.

Abortion will be a top issue with women, especially Democrats and Independents. And we despise trump.

Thank you for sharing, Chris. Well written and an enjoyable read, once again. I am praying that your prediction is correct and do believe it will be very very close. However, the thought of a 2028 run by Trump, oh God NO.

Yup, you said it: we will NEVER be rid of him. And since I am sure he will live long into his 90s (we can only hope this won't happen; heck, what's the point of eating right and exercising if this fat boor can live into his 90s!), alot of us will be spending the last 20 odd years of our lives with him taking up rent inside our heads). And you'll never run out of material.

Based on (unfortunately) too much personal experience with malignant narcissists, I can assure you that they seem to live forever.

Great article Chris. I hope your predictions turn out to be correct, except we can do without another Trump campaign in 2028. I can’t even imagine what he would be like following another “disputed” loss and 4 more years of cognitive decline.

It is over a year away. Voters aren't engaged, so the polls are not meaningful, though maybe interesting and provide material for pundits.

So much can happen day to day, week to week, month to month. Who would have predicted that there will be a war in Israel, for example. We don't know what will be the issue in the election, what will be next year's October surprise, the state of the economy. We don't even know for sure who the candidates are. (There seem to be Republicans running who think there's a chance Trump will drop out). We don't know the strength of third and fourth parties and who they will take votes from. I don't want to be snarky, but this is too tempting...so what? is the perfect title for this column.
