I just don't understand how all of these so called "leaders" in the Republican party justify supporting Trump. Are they truly that selfish and self focused on their own futures? Or do they simply not believe that our democracy is fragile and could fall with a few bad events that break the wrong way? Trump has learned a lot about how to gut the government. He could easily eliminate the safeguards that protected our country during the last transition of power. It's scary.
Christi, I think that's right. I think many Republicans -- including Kemp -- are treating Trump like just another normal Republican. But, his actions over the last 7 years suggest otherwise.
And of course, in keeping with tip-top journalistic standards, the Journal-Constitution reporter asked Kemp to give specifics as to how Biden's administration has thrown the country into the 4th ring of Dante's Inferno.
Oh...wait...the newspaper employee failed to do so?
And just pulled a "Welker," and simply moved on to the next question without push back?
When will the next Jonathan Swan come into political reporting?
The comparison really is between an aging man who has done so much for the country and an aging criminal with authoritarian tendencies and actions who attempted to stay in power after losing an election. We do know what Joe Biden is going to do in 2024 after the election. He's going to celebrate his victory over Donald Trump. I know some quarters are trying to pollwash (Giving him fake favorable polling numbers) him (Donald Trump). Just look at the trends of the real polls.i.e the recent off year election results, Democrats have beven outperforming!!
Keeps reinforcing how low the Republican Party has gone. Anyone that will put country over party, is out. They either resign or get primaried and lose. This is sick. It’s really coming down to our fragile democracy is at risk and I fear for our future.
Yes, yes, yes, yes. And keep repeating these fundamental differences Chris. Based upon poll trends, Trump is and has been the overwhelming choice of self-identified Republican voters to be the Republican nominee against President Joe Biden in the 2024 POTUS election. Trump is that worse of all candidates that Alexander Hamilton warned about as a hypothetical. As a defeated incumbent President, Trump demonstrated his contempt for American voters, our Constitution, our laws and every other candidate present and past, by refusing to accept his defeat; his firing by American voters. He lied incessantly from election night since. He bullied sychophantic Republican Senators, Representatives, Governors, etc... to parrot and lend legitimacy to his lies. He motivated 30,000+ Americans to travel to DC to intimidate our Congress against certifying his defeat on Jan. 6, 2021. He motivated a subset of those 30k to engage in mob violence against law enforcement, break into and vandalize our Capitol, terrorize our Members of Congress, including his sychophants, and a lot of those vandals loudly announced their intent to murder Trump's VP, Mike Pence and the Speaker of the House. I was a press aide for three different social and fiscal GOPers from the mid-1980s to 2013. I judged Trump unfit and unqualified and voted against him in the 2016 Primary in my state. I voted 3rd party for Evan McMullin in the 2016 General; 1) 'cuz Hillary had a 10-point lead in credible polls the week before the election and McMullin was on the ballot in my state. I haven't voted for a GOPer since every GOP nominee on my ballots and my state/district/county GOP party leaders have been sychophants for Trump. I have voted for Democratic nominees from Joe Biden down ballot because I know that despite policy preferences that make me very uncomfortable, they're committed to adhering to our Constitution and laws compared to Trump who's demonstrated and states incessantly that he will eviscerate any obstacle, whether a person, our Constitution or law that impedes him from obtaining something he wants.
Brian Kemp was never truly a "stand up" guy. Don't forget that he was Secretary of State in Georgia, and went all out to get black voters disenrolled to ensure his victory over Stacey Abrams. I can't say it made the entire difference, but it made a substantial difference. Trump pounded the daylights out of him, but he's not entirely innocent.
I frequently marvel that there are so many people to appear to not give a damn about our country's precious democracy. Reading this post, particularly the bullet-list summary of the two choices, it dawned on me that (Maga zealots aside) there may be voters for whom it's a Sophie's choice, in the sense that, sure, Trump represents the destruction of democracy but has conned many into believing he can save the economy, jobs, etc; versus, Biden who clearly cares about democracy but who many people are genuinely afraid that his leadership will result in a failed economy, a fatally weakened country, and essentially no country left to preserve democracy for. That's not how I feel, I feel that we can preserve democracy AND have a country worth living in. But, it occurs to me that that may the the awful choice some people think they're faced with.
I think the issue is that people -- despite recent history! -- don't think democracy is on the line. Which seems crazy. Because Trump came within a Mike Pence of possibly overturning the election in 2020.
Not that surprising. Kemp is fully aware that Trump will be the nominee and is reengaging with the Republican assertion that Biden and the Democratics are destroying the country. That's the party line and it's the one I believe the Republicans will push very hard in an attempt to mask Trump's many liabilities once we pivot to the general election. If you follow conservative media, you'll get plenty of reinforcement of that attitude. Whether that's a winner overall is up in the air.
In the end, Kemp is apparently just like every other Republican--power means more to him than integrity and our country's democracy, and I'm willing to bet that he too must be more scared of our Orange former leader than he lets on.
Shame on Kemp for exposing himself! Yuck! But, I am glad he did so we can all know he is a self-serving coward. It's always country over party as any decent, moral person knows.
Kinzinger and Cheney were willing to put the country over their party and their own political ambitions. Kemp clearly isn’t.

Correct Chris! I can't like your comment because the reality of it is appalling, but undeniable.

Apparently, not soon.

Further proof that Harry Truman was right 75 years ago and even moreso today: "The only 'Good Republicans' are pushing up daisies."
Good one.

And it’s not just Kemp. Too many in the GOP will bend the knee to Trump if/when he wins the nomination. ☹️
Party affiliation over common sense. Would be funny if not so tragic.

quote: With Trump, you don’t even need to imagine what he would do in 2024. We already know! He did it in 2020!
Trump ACTUALLY prepared his "rigged" plan in 2016 under an assumption he was going to lose to Hillary Clinton!

Kemp sees his choice as “stay in office” or “get the boot”. He doesn’t care about the rest of it.
