I often wonder how different things would be if the rioters on Jan. 6 had actually gotten to Mike Pence and something truly awful happened to him. Would that have been enough to give the GOP senators the backbone they needed to convict Trump in his impeachment trial? Just because the insurrection wasn't successful doesn't make Trump innocent. If I try to rob a bank tomorrow and get caught while doing so, they're not going to let me go just because I didn't succeed.
Trump is a giant liar in proportions none of us have seen in our lifetime. The man who asked the question about the insurrection and why none of the people who worked for him are supporting him was asked if he was going to vote for Trump again and he said no.
A local attorney posted on FB his disdain for trump threatening to use the military on his political opponents. The responses from a few of the MAGA crowd were extraordinary. Extraordinarily bad. The typical crap, a la Yunkin, that's not what he said or meant and then it devolved into a "yea but BLM did this and that".
I'm telling you that racism is at the heart of so much of our current situation. There are millions of Americans who simply can't fathom that minorities are here and certainly wish they knew their place and it's not in our leadership. They are pissed that Obama got in and are determined that another "one" ain't slipping by this time.
They simply can't acknowledge trump has any flaws or shortcomings because he is standing between another black person and the presidency.
Is every trump supporter a racist? Absolutely not. Though it's becoming crystal clear that they ignore all of the economic and mental health issues and the criminal behavior to support him.
But every racist is a trump supporter. It's becoming harder to differentiate between them.
The mental health argument holds absolutely no weight. I don’t understand why this is continually a thing that democrats cling to. The same democrats that were absolutely 100% behind a clearly aging Pres. Biden. I won’t argue the other points, although we disagree, because there’s not a real double standard there. But on the cognitive and mental heath aspect the democrats have absolutely zero credibility on that one.
Aging is not a mental health issue. Biden is old, but shows no signs of cognative decline or mental health issues.
Inability to talk in complete sentences like starting a sentence and midway forgetting where the sentence was going and finishing that sentence talking about something completely unrelated, unable to converse comprehensively, persecution complex, making up history and making up "facts" and making up words, inability to acknowledge the facts of recent events, these can be signs of mental health issues and cognative issues. For crying out loud, what did that 40 minutes on a town hall stage swaying to music instead of taking questions say to you?? That he is a cool dude or something??
I think they enjoy being entertained by djt and nothing else matters to them. The problem is, the President of the USA is supposed to be a chief executive, not an entertainer.
This is not a game, but maga seems to think it is a football game and "winning" against "the other side" is the only point! smh, where have all the adults gone to?
I’m not arguing that former Pres. Trump is the smartest man alive. I’m simply pointing out that these same democrats who are now opining over his age had zero qualms about Pres. Biden running.
And, age was absolutely an issue for djt and the gop against President Biden. But djt is all of 3 years younger than the President. And djt is now the oldest person to ever run for President. So who are the hypocrites again???
You responded to a comment about djt's mental health issues by saying dems were hypocrites because of supporting Biden despite his age. Age and mental health issues are not the same thing at all.
Appreciate the very civil response but the democrats are the ones that forced Biden to step out of the race. It's fairly obvious, especially since trump himself keeps saying it, that the GOP really wanted to run against Biden. I know that a very large percentage of Dems were unhappy when Biden announced he was running. It was obvious to most Americans that his decline just this year was stunning and complete. The democrats forced him out. He wasn't happy about it. So I'm not sure what else they could have done. The debate forced them to acknowledge his inability to remain a viable candidate.
Where are the forces in the GOP saying the same thing while Waldo plays orchestra conductor to a bewildered crowd?
Well played. I would counter with the simple fact that Pres. Biden was going to get crushed by former Pres. Trump and the democrats that forced Pres. Biden out were more concerned about winning as opposed to moving Pres. Biden on down the road. The same democrats that ousted him routinely stated that behind closed doors he was as sharp as ever. It was only after his abysmal debate performance that made it clear to everyone that Pres. Biden had, to put it as politely as possible, lost a step, that the full court press began.
You can certainly criticize many Ds and Biden himself for ignoring his obviously diminished state for too long. But when the issue became manifest, many Ds stepped up; raised the issue loudly and clearly; and Biden eventually acknowledged it. In contrast, Rs continue to make excuses for a candidate who is obsessed with personal grievances , rambling, and seemingly unable to respond coherently to questions and issues. Rs similarly ignore the numerous former appointees who have stated his is unfit based on their up close and personal experience.
You have a valid point. I would pushback and say that the race is literally a toss up at this point. I would like to believe that if former Pres. Trump was getting swamped in the polls, another candidate would emerge. But that’s just not the case.
You have to remember that what Trump saw on TV on January 6 was "love". Love of his acolytes for their Orange God as they tore through the US Capitol. So in his very warped view of the events on that day, they were showing their love for their God.
Donny is still the same Donny. We know him only now it’s just MORE. His behavior is escalating as he becomes more delusional. But we don’t know JD, or at least his full evil potential. And if these two con men of the highest order make it to the oval, JD will be siting behind the Resolute Desk before 2028.
Chris, thank you for including that classic Beatle clip. I remember watching that at home on my parents' TV at the time. I was 6 years old and not only did I have an older brother who was already a Beatles fan, I was growing up in LIVERPOOL! It felt a little unbelievable, that *our* little pop group was getting all this attention. Thank for the memories.
Chris, the chart of national popular vote polling misses is interesting but, for those of us concerned with the honesty and accuracy of our elections (especially since HAVA made the casting/counting process more computerized and less transparent in 2002), that big-picture lens obscures state-level statistical forensic patterns that are curious and disturbing.
In 2016, for example, the national red shift was 1.1% (as shown on the chart, that was the amount by which polling under-predicted Trump's nationwide vote share). BUT the red shifts (from both aggregate pre-election polls and pre-adjusted exit polls) in the crucial swing states were MUCH greater: 5.8% in NC, 5.1% in PA, 4.7% in WI -- each more than enough to reverse the results. And strangely out of step with the national polling-accuracy picture. Why would polls break down just where the election results mattered? A question worth asking, and thus far unanswered.
In MI and FL, the red shift from pre-adjusted exit polls was damped by the fact that each state spans two time zones and the exit poll results were not publicly released until more than an hour after poll closing, allowing for substantial adjustment towards congruence with the vote counts. Even so, FL exhibited a red shift of 2.5%, enough to reverse the outcome. While these statistics do not prove manipulation of vote counts or other species of election fraud, they are remarkably consistent with the patterns we have analyzed since 2004: a recurrent red shift targeted to states and contests bearing national significance.
This article from the New York Times is the best I’ve seen on pro-Trump voters. They truly are brainwashed by watching Fox News, or, as Chris points out, they just don’t care about January 6, are dismissive of Trump’s behaviors, etc. To these voters in PA, Trump will lower the price of gasoline and milk, and that’s what matters to them.
Democracy argument is working and has worked in the past. Remember 2022 when President Biden was talking about Democracy and the talking heads were saying that people are saying economy was their main concern . And the talking heads predictEd red wave which never materialized. So people , please don't believe Chris when he says the voters don't care about what happened in January 6th. Voters really do care that's why that gentleman in the Town Hall brought it up and got that horrible response from the Cult leader.
Democracy matters. January 6th matters to the voters and you will see in November that it really does.
Per Chris, January 6th doesn't matter to the voters but turn the page line from Trump by Harris does not work for him (Chris) There you have it people
I hope you are better at reading your patients symptoms, than reading Chris’ newsletter. He said “Again. I know none of this will change undecided voters’ minds. They either don’t care about what happened on January 6 or care about other things more. That’s their right.” He did not say it doesn’t matter to voters. It was the undecided voters he was referring to. In fact, he was appalled that it doesn’t matter when he ended by saying you can choose your options but not your facts. As to Harris’, “Turn the page” comment, she may have meant turn the page from Trump, but when a candidate says it’s time to turn the page they usually mean it’s time to turn the page from the previous administration. Your incessant claim that Chris is a MAGA is beginning to wear on me and, I suggest, other of Chris’ reasonable followers as well. Now go ahead and refute what I just said and claim I’m in bed with Chris and Trump.
Trump and his MAGA sycophants can lie, and spin, and obfuscate all day long. And they surely will.
The fact is, one tiny, two letter word..."we"... has exposed Trump for the seditious conspirator that he was and is. Nothing will change that.
I often wonder how different things would be if the rioters on Jan. 6 had actually gotten to Mike Pence and something truly awful happened to him. The reaction from the audience in the Town Hall to Trump's comments was everything

They literally can't acknowledge what is right there in plain sight.
Did you watch his debate performance? 🤷🏻♂️
Have you watched ANY of djt's interviews or rallies or so called press conferences?
I’m not arguing that former Pres. Trump is the smartest man alive. I’m simply pointing out that these same democrats who are now opining over his age had zero qualms about Pres. Biden running.
And, age was absolutely an issue for djt and the gop against President Biden. But djt is all of 3 years younger than the President. And djt is now the oldest person to ever run for President. So who are the hypocrites again???
No one said anything about djt's age.
You responded to a comment about djt's mental health issues by saying dems were hypocrites because of supporting Biden despite his age. Age and mental health issues are not the same thing at all.

IMO, that the race is close is the indictment- rather than the defense- of Trump’s voters
Again. My point still stands. Half the country supports him and will vote for him.
It’s not a point. It’s lamentable fact
You have to remember that what Trump saw on TV on January 6 was "love". Love of his acolytes for their Orange God as they tore through the US Capitol. So in his very warped view of the events on that day, they were showing their love for their God.

If career politicians that were there that day can look the other way, I don’t find it hard to believe that voters can, too.
The Beatles video may have been the thing that brought me down from the ledge. Today.

Trump's Stop the Steal circus effectively put the kibosh on such attempts to verify election results with objective, careful, data gathering and analysis. But 2020 itself was the MOST red-shifted election since we began studying them in 2002, something that should at least give pause going into E2024. But long, but it is B. Franklin in why we have a perfect government even with faults. Jan 6 was horrible. It was intended to remove our constitution.
In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such; because I think
a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a
blessing to the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely to be well
administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before
it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of any
other. I doubt too whether any other Convention we can obtain, may be able to make a better
Constitution. For when you assemble a number of men to have the advantage of their joint wisdom,
you inevitably assemble with those men, all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion,
their local interests, and their selfish views. From such an assembly can a perfect production be
expected? It therefore astonishes me, Sir, to find this system approaching so near to perfection as it
does; and I think it will astonish our enemies, who are waiting with confidence to hear that our
councils are confounded like those of the Builders of Babel; and that our States are on the point of
separation, only to meet hereafter for the purpose of cutting one another’s throats. Thus, I consent, Sir,
to this Constitution because I expect no better, and because I am not sure, that it is not the best. The
opinions I have had of its errors, I sacrifice to the public good. I have never whispered a syllable of
them abroad. Within these walls they were born, and here they shall die. If every one of us in
returning to our Constituents were to report the objections, he has had to it, and endeavor to gain
partizans in support of them, we might prevent its being generally received, and thereby lose all the
salutary effects & great advantages resulting naturally in our favor among foreign Nations as well as
among ourselves, from our real or apparent unanimity. Much of the strength & efficiency of any
Government in procuring and securing happiness to the people, depends, on opinion, on the general
opinion of the goodness of the Government, as well as well as of the wisdom and integrity of its
Governors. I hope therefore that for our own sakes as a part of the people, and for the sake of
posterity, we shall act heartily and unanimously in recommending this Constitution (if approved by
Congress & confirmed by the Conventions) wherever our influence may extend, and turn our future
thoughts & endeavors to the means of having it well administered.
