The “Four Pinocchio Time” is interesting but biased in that it does not chronicle enough of Trump’s (and GOP) lie and instead throws in some thin “lies” told by President Biden and some democrats.
I mean Biden saying “Inflation “was at 9 percent when I came in and it’s now down around 3 percent.” that is mainly “sloppy” as compared to what Trump has said on the subject suggesting some sort of equivalence is dishonest.....
“Inflation is the worst it has ever been in the history of our country”
Here are some others Trump said in 2024 that Kessler left out…
“I am the one who saved Obamacare”
“You know last time, last election — we did great in 2016. A lot of people don’t know, we did much better in 2020. “We won. We won”
“It was a rigged election. If I thought I lost, I wouldn’t be doing this again.”
“I didn’t say ‘lock her (Hillary) up”
“I had the best economy in the history of our country”
“No transgender, no operations — you know, they take your kid — there are some places, your boy leaves for school, comes back a girl. Okay? Without parental consent. At first, when I was told that was actually happening, I said, you know, it’s an exaggeration. No: it happens. It happens. There are areas where it happens.”
And on and on and on.
Just the inclusion of others besides Trump in Kessler’s recap is a form of TRUMP ‘SANE-WASHING’…..treating Trump like others ignoring the overwhelming magnitude and shamelessness of Trump repeated, serial, pathological lying.
The “mainstream media” has done a great disservice to America.
Agree 💯! The MSM is completely complicit in sane-washing his lies, which along with the right-wing media propaganda machine (not just Fox/OAN/Newsmax, but the Sinclair Media Group’s almost 200 “local” TV stations and iHeart Media’s almost 900 “local” radio stations) is the primary reason why SO much of the nation is ill-informed and 49.81% of the voters put a convicted felon into office.
I don't have particularly strong feelings on DST, but I am old enough to remember we first tried making DST "permanent" getting up and walking to school when it was pitch black outside and looked like it was the middle of the night. That experiment (1973?) was very short-lived and about as successful as prohibition. I'm not sure why the result would be any different 50 years later.
Chris, those of us at the northern latitudes and western longitudes of time zones will strenuously disagree with you. Here in Antrim County, MI, sunrise is presently 8:10A and sunset is at 5P, only a half hour off symmetry. The sunrise time is dangerous to elementary school kids waiting for buses as it is, more so when it's snowing. Year-round daylight worsens time that, not to mention the need for alarm clocks because of pets waiting for sunrise to fuss. During the summer, daylight time pushes sunset past 10P, lessening popular hours and income for bars and other night spots. This is why MIchigan shunned daylight time for years, until the auto companies finally prevailed, so that they could align their MI factory hours with those in ON and OH during the summer. AZ has the right idea - standard time year-round. If the South wants to advance clocks an hour year-round, change the time zone boundaries, not the clocks Up North!
Mr Cillizza - I just emailed you about this post - there are, in fact, plenty of people who would prefer year-round standard time. I'm one of them. Please read the email I just sent you.
Chris daylight savings time was first used in the US in 1918 as part of the war effort.
Doctors and sleep scientists all say we should make standard time permanent as it corresponds to our natural circadian rhythms.
We tried permanent daylight savings time in the 1970's and incidents of children being hit by cars on the way to school, in the pitch dark, jumped precipitously so it was changed back.
Daylight savings time results in more energy use, not less.
"DST was first implemented during World War I as an energy saving policy. However, recent studies have found that people actually consume more energy during DST, because with more daylight, people run air conditioners for longer, even if their lights aren't on for as long."
"People also go out more often during the extended daylight, usually in cars, which increases carbon emissions."
ON DST. I am sort of on the fence with it. I sort of like the early morning light on standard time. But I also like the extra night light. What makes me lean to standard is the fact that my physiology seems to prefer standard time. I sleep better and feel better overall. Go figure.
I'm also on the fence. If I was to vote right now I'd opt to keep changing the clocks twice a year. If I had to pick one for year round I'd choose DST.
With you on this, Chris, I'd take year-long Daylight Savings Time over Standard any day of the week. It would be pretty depressing for the afternoons to start getting dark early in October. I guess the counter-argument is that with DST kids would be going to school in the dark in January. But I've kind of come around to the idea that switching twice a year is alright. Standard time is only four months now. The sunsets actually start getting later each afternoon around December 10 (depends on where you live, but look it up!) While the sunrises keep getting later and later well into January. So maybe the system we have now really is the best of both worlds.
lol, I highly enjoyed your DST rant. You were definitely on a roll. 😂 I agree, to be sure. But it’s always fun to see someone when they are really hopped up in a funny - not stressed or angry - way! Go Chris!
Standard time ONLY please! Keep those of us in the westernmost parts of the time zones in mind please (Michigan here) — the sun would rise way too late in the day in the winter, and we really don’t need the sun to set close to 10 pm in the summer. By the time I get my summer bonfire rolling, everyone is getting ready for bed!
Chris, you are correct he is confused. There is a huge push in Florida to make Daylight Savings time permanent. It’s not hard to figure out. Florida’s number one industry is tourism. The tourists don’t care if it’s light out at 7:30 in the morning, but they sure don’t want it getting dark at 4 PM. As Florida is President Trump‘s home base I expect he’s on board. It seems like the only real opposition is education. Of course we don’t need to have the buses pick up at 7 AM, nor do teachers need to be done by 2:30 in the afternoon.
We should just stay on Standard time all year. The darkness in the mornings ( kids waiting for busses ) is not smart to have it dark u til 8:45 in December - January .
How does widespread disorientation serve a political purpose, is this not modestly obvious or at least open to discussion. The list grows longer. Always remember Churchill’s thoughts on managing threats. Trump’s suggestions will distract until he gets a bite. In any case the list of ploys grows longer.

I like Kessler's column, and read it every week. I especially love the cats.

They should be ashamed, if they had the ability…

Bingo. What Happened the Last Time the U.S. Tried to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent?
A 1974 switch to year-round DST proved unpopular, with Americans expressing “distaste” for the long, dark winter mornings

Antrim County! I graduated high school from Elk Rapids!

I’m with you. Abandon daylight saving time. Standard time year round.
Yeah, I’ve spent most of my life north of the 45th parallel - permanent DST means for months out of the year, it would be dark well past 08:00.
Plus, for my observant Jewish friends, permanent DST means they would have troubles engaging in morning prayer rituals before work.
Our votes will cancel.
Actually the American medical association recommends permanent standard time, not permanent daylight savings time. https://www.ama-assn.org/press-center/press-releases/ama-calls-permanent-standard-time#:~:text=Data%20show%20that%20the%20sudden,disorders%2C%20and%20motor%20vehicle%20crashes.
We got rid of DST in Arizona years ago.

Tried DST in 70s.

I absolutely HATE standard time. Who want the sun coming up at 5:00 in the morning (or earlier)? Get rid of standard time; make DST permanent.

The sun would rise at 8:51 am in Minneapolis in the winter. How would this reduce accidents in the morning commute? I say permanent standard time!
