I mean this in the kindest way possible, but those who are criticizing Chris for his recent posts need to do a quick reality check. Joe Biden was a fine president. Joe Biden is not a good candidate in November and in the unlikely event that he wins, he will almost certainly be incapable of fulfilling his duties and serving out his term. If this is news to you, then I question your judgment.

Democratic leadership has a job to do, and they need to do it now. Either unite behind President Biden, or go to him and tell him that it is a Party decision, not a personal decision, and have hard data on why another candidate would be a better choice to defeat Donald J Trump. This hand-wringing and innuendo has got to stop. As a Party and a nation we deserve better. Biden is not going to get any younger, or more robust. He has a terrific record. He deserves either a graceful exit or a ringing endorsement. This shilly-shallying is pointless and dangerous. Let’s not hand this election to Donald J Trump.

Biden was losing before the debate, and now the polling serms to indicate that it has gotten quite a bit worse. He can't complete three sentences without faltering. Reports from many credible sources say he is getting worse..rapidly. House and Senate seats may go red because of Bidens lack of coattails..more like an anchor. Foreign dignitaries were startled and shocked by his obvious decline...and the list of his obvious signs of feebleness goes on..and on..What the heck will it take to get people out of the "stick with Uncle Joe" camp? He has had a good run. He is now mentally compromised. It is sad, but it is true. Let's nominate a Dem who can kick Trumps arse!! Geez.

I think I need to write a little letter to my Rep, Mr. Jared Golden. I. Am. NOT. Okay. with a Trump win.

I have voted for Jared and I know this isa tough very red district...but this is outrageous.

He is trying to save his skin and thinks that he can throw Biden under the bus . He's being a poster boy for Chris Cilliza and his Republican colleagues. But, guess what?, he's going to eat his words

Jared Golden's job includes being a Democrat, not a lickspittle; he's supposed to represent us ALL, here in the 2nd District.

Than you get to vote him out.

Agreed, T L. Chris is thoroughly offbase with his Golden comments. Golden is as transparently self-centered as one can be.

Mr. Golden is showing his roots...he used to be an aide for Senator Susan Collins, so he probably did learn weathervaning from the best in the suck-up business. Why he didn't remain a Republican is a mystery.

You make it sound like vultures are a bad thing…. These folks are hopefully the first of many, enough to finally convince Biden to overcome his ego and - for the good of the country - step aside for someone younger and more articulate.

Wow...who knew that the smartest tactical move by the Biden re-election team would be to insist that Debate 1 take place as early as June (thus giving them time for Plan B - or plan "not B")? We present the "June surprise"!

Chris Cillizza is by *no* means the *only* pundit on Substack who’s having a hair-on-fire moment about Biden’s debate performance, so I’m not trying to pick on him. I really like JVL, Tim Miller, Joe Perticone and the whole crew from The Bulwark and for the most part, they’re reinforcing Chris’s opinion that Biden should, at the least, highly consider stepping out….

Expand full comment

Sorry, but that’s ridiculous., Sam While I don’t agree with Angel’s assessment of Chris being as blatantly slanted as Fox News, but the audacity to think that he IS “the truth”, when his opinion is just one of MANY within the chattering class of political pundits, is misguided at the least. You might want to read a few other opinions in order to ascertain what “the truth” MIGHT actually be.

But what's the difference between what Chris Cilliza keep posting and what fox news keep broadcasting ?

Expand full comment

Well, Fox News lies to their audience and they *know* they’re lying, if you look at the evidence from the Dominion Voting Systems settlement, where texts show that to clearly be the case with Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, etc.

I believe that Chris is sincere in his *belief* that he’s unbiased and presenting things “as they are”, though I think that he’s offbase. HUGE difference between that and conscious & intentional lying.

Hasta la vista Amigo. This is not a forum for the ideological battle for Democracy when the writer is already preaching that we have the check and balance (SCOTUS?) to protect against Convicted Trump authoritarian speech and action like Jan 6th.

Cillizza”… I do believe that there are enough checks and balances in place — Congress, Supreme Court etc. — that will keep Trump from going full-dictator — even if he wanted to.

I think you made a relevant point about looking at the next 4 years rather than the next 4 months when discussing Biden's ability to be president. I got step further and question whether he is fit to be president for the rest of this term. I'm surprised we aren't seeing calls for the 25th amendment removal of him now. I'm guessing only because the Republicans are giddy with the idea of red waving a Biden Democratic party. As a double hater back in 2020, it's hard to imagine actually believing trump would be a better president, but I'm very close to that after the debate.

Interestingly, Biden stepping down may be one of the most heroic things he could do. Handing over the torch and passing on the reigns of power is a defining characteristic of our democracy. It could be the most important thing he does as president. Especially as everyone fears a loss means we never hand power over again if trump becomes dictator for life

Jesus, Chris, if you can’t see that Jared Golden is throwing Joe Biden under the bus to save his OWN election and career, then maybe I’ve given you the benefit of the doubt *far* too many times.

You always like to say that you “tell it like it is”, but you clearly spout your opinions and cloak them in this mendacious air that *you’re* the one with superior “insights”, but this outrageous highlighting of a selfish, self-possessed small time congressman, because it supports your *opinion*, is putting me close to the edge of cancelling.

And in the meantime, you just ignore the HUGE implications of the ruling in Donald J. Trump v United States, calling this the “ONLY story” worth reporting on, while the core of the Constitution has been ripped to shreds by what is now obviously the worst Supreme Court since Taney’s time, potentially far worse than Taney and the Dred Scott opinion.

Good thing I pay for subscriptions with Jay Kuo, Joyce White Vance, Heather Cox Richardson, and others. At least I get thoughtful opinions from *them* without the vanity of them thinking they “tell it like it is”….

You may be right about this Maine congressman and you are right about the risks of a president above the law. But you are off base if you think that the public will reelect Biden under present conditions.

The Biden saga is a huge story. It’s one we all face someday. Some of you are blaming the media when your anger should be with the Biden White House for not dropping out earlier

Left of center, please stay subscribed here but don't give Chris the benefit of doubt any longer. I figured him out a long time ago as he himself has said(although he claimed that I was wrong). We need people like you on this platform to tell Chris as we see it and not to heroe worship him and take his opinions as the ultimate truth. “If Dems found half as much energy to attack MAGA, the real threat, then we’d be good.

For all the geniuses out there who think someone else would be better,

1) explain to me who it is,

2) how they get on the ballot in all 50 states,

3) how they get the money and apparatus together to get this done in 4 months (the over 100 million Biden has on hand doesn’t transfer)

4) how we explain that a random person has been selected… subverting the votes that were casts, because of bad polls.

Dems spend all their time seeking perfection, while Republicans focus on their disastrous agenda & could care less so long as they rig the system in their favor!

USE YOUR ENERGY ADDRESSING PROJECT 2025 & the fact that this Supreme Court has laid the foundation to finalize the full destruction of our democracy!”

Lloyd Doggett used to be my representative. He’s a very thoughtful and respected member. Kind of a Howard Baker of the House but not a moderate. If he says Biden should step down this means it’s a widespread sentiment. It’s just a matter of time now. I guess by early next week he’ll withdraw

I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that they want to delay sentencing on his 34 count conviction. All these things happened BEFORE he was elected during the early part of his campaign. He was NOT president and therefore should not be eligible for ANY immunity re: these charges!

As to Biden stepping aside, this is a difficult decision for him and his advisors to make. Replacing him with someone STRONG enough to beat Trump……… even more difficult.

I am praying for America like never before.
