Agreed. This guy is the most cynical opportunist and "which way is the wind blowing?" coward of a politician in office today--and that is saying something.

You mean, besides Trump himself, of course!?

Sununu doesn't have the excuse of blinding megalomania and toxic narcissism that TFG does, though. In some ways, he's worse because he should know better.

Expand full comment

Well, I have to agree with you there.

I hope that this at least goes down as the moment that any chance of Sununu ever being a presidential or vice presidential nominee, Cabinet secretary, ambassador, or appointed or elected to anything whatsoever went out the window. It was that bad.

Agreed! I only wish New Hampshire voters have enough wisdom to chuck such a blatant political opportunist out of his job at the first opportunity. But, alas, New Hampshire is deep, dark red with idiot MAGAs...so I'd be pleasantly surprised should that scenario actually play out. Actually, I'd guess I'd be flabbergasted.

NH is more purple than deep red. Our two congressional seats and both senate seats are held by Democrats. The state house reps are controlled by the GOP by a very thin margin (2-4 seats at most). Sununu isn't running for governor again and has said he wouldn't run for another office. (As much as I detest the guy the two announced GOP candidates running for governor so far sound like Paul LePage wannabes.) After Sununus's statement about endorsing the orange malignant tumor I wouldn't be surprised to see him renege on that claim and take a run at either senate seat in the future. One can only hope this brings about the end of the Sununu dynasty in this state. Daddy was a NH governor, too, and his brother was a one-term senator in the early 2000s. We do seem to have a very vocal contingent of MAGAts around the state but they've been around since 2016 and haven't won in the presidential election yet so let's hope that trend continues in November. 2024.

Paul LePage wannabes??? Oh dear goddess--spare us! Yes...I well remember Daddy's stint as Chief of Staff for George HW Bush. He only lasted for two years and I don't remember exactly what but wasn't there some controversy with some of his actions as C of S?

TO BE CLEAR - 51% of voters have NEVER supported Tump - and NEVER will

Expand full comment

I believe if you took a survey of voters at a Trump rally, the number would be even higher. 😎

Expand full comment

Which doesn't matter for squat, you moron. The Trumpscum wo show up at one his hatealongs only represent somewhere around 20% of voters. Which is still too many, but every survey shows that 20% (including you) are too stupid to read the memo if you ever received it.

Someone got up on the wrong side of the planet this morning. "You moron"?? "Too stupid"?? It seemed that it was a tongue-in-cheek comment, as indicated by the emoji, but I could be mistaken. Have a nice day!

you are not mistaken. yes it was tongue-in-cheek, or sarcasm!

Thank you for writing this, Chris.

Chris Sununu fucking sucks and I really hope we stop giving this guy Sunday morning TV time to play the role of "Republican moderate."

Expand full comment

I used to think Sununu was at least a decent guy for a Republican. But he's been exposed as a fraud.

I would like to think that if Biden loses the election in November and then tries to do the same things that Trump did in 2020 (tries to steal the election, incites an insurrection, etc.) that most sensible Democrats would recognize it for what it is and not just fall in line behind the leader of their party (cult?). Country over party!

Expand full comment

This is really stunningly preposterous..."“Me and 51 percent of America.” (Side note: Trump has not hit 51% in any recent poll I’ve seen.)

Forget about Trump not hitting 51% in any "polls" must he be reminded that in TWO elections Trump never came close to 51% of actual VOTES!!!

2016 - 46.1%

2020 - 46.8%

Hey Mr. Sununu, guess who DID get over 51% of the vote for president.

Joe Biden - 51.3%

Sununu says that he would "support" Trump even if he was convicted of the most egregious crimes a president EVER could commit. And there is ZERO doubt Trump DID commit these crimes.

Purposely stealing. mishandling and illegally refusing to return the highest classified documents known in the US government, and actively, purposely and illegally abusing presidential power in order to steal an election and refuse to allow the peaceful transfer of power after losing an election.

With the moronic brushing aside of these realities response....."Yes, me and 51 percent of America."

I sure did not remember Sununu or ANY Republican supporting President Biden after he DID GET over 51% of the vote.

I would say that Sununu is not individually the "absolute worst". He is simply within the mainstream of today's Republican Party which, collectively are the ABSOLUTE WORST anti-American mob in the history of this nation.

Traitors all!!!!

What Sununu did so expertly on Sunday morning was clarify the essential truth of the current Republican “party”: there is no there there. Every position is nothing more than the script of the day, in search of nothing but power, position, and “relevance.” It would be outright laughable if it weren’t so frightening.

If I told my parents that everyone else was doing it, my dad would have said ‘oh, so now you have joined the stupid group’?

Yup so would mine have said something similarly cutting and truthful.

Why single out Sununu? (Other than it makes Chris's look bad). Is this any different than Lindsay Graham, Tec Cruz, Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, etc?

“Like, really? Is that what leadership looks like in the Trump Republican party?”

The GOP is a bizarro world party. The base is the leadership. Sununu and Congressional Republicans and even Trump himself are the followers. Prime example is Dear “Leader” getting booed when he tried to take credit for developing the great vaccine.

Sununu can sit back and enjoy his unalloyed support for Trump while David Pecker, Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougall are testifying in a few weeks.

I’m guessing that Chris is a good Christian family man and all that usual hoo hah.

Chris Sununu comes from a long time Republican family. His brother John E Sununu was a NH Representative for 6 years and then a single term Senator representing NH. Their father, John H. Sununu was governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989. He was Chief of Staff to President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1991.

The Sununu's are (or rather, 'were') a moderate Republican family who are clearly very used to and quite comfortable with following "leaders" who are less than "ept", shall we say.

This is what Sununu, Barr and all the other people who've screamed "Trump is a danger to the country!" then say they will vote for him remind me of:

SNL "Buckwheat has been shot!" Episode from '83:

Gas Station Attendant: [in New England accent] Sure, I remember Stutts. He was a loner, but a real hard worker. I mean, he pumped the gas, he checked the oil, he washed the windows. Nice kid.

Ted Koppel: Do you believe he killed Buckwheat?

Gas Station Attendant: Oh, yes, definitely. That's all he talked about. I remember one day I says, uh, "Stutts, why are you working so hard?" He says, "Cause I'm saving up to buy a gun, so I can kill Buckwheat." [shrugs]

If Trump is convicted in the stolen documents case he will be, effectively, guilty of treason. For a Governor like Sununu to say that he would support that person for PRESIDENT is horrifying and disgusting. A pox on his house.

Hi Christina,

I live just down the street from you (in MA, about 15 miles south of the border). You are more qualified to speak about Sununu than I am, but he always struck me as being cut from the more centrist/moderate cloth, similar to Charlie Baker down this way. I may not have supported all of his policies, but I respected Sununu as an honorable individual, especially in light of his previous anti-Trump comments.

Along with the baby and the bathwater I just tossed that opinion out the window. Sununu has removed his mask and revealed to all of us that he's just as much of an opportunist politician as the rest of them. I don't have your depth of wisdom, so I tip my hat to you for being on to this before many of the rest of us.

It's not enough to say that this is a sad example, for Sununu it's embarrassingly sad. He's destroyed whatever positive reputation he had in order to suck up to a wannabe dictator - a person who will toss him to the wolves sooner than scarfing down his next BigMac. This is who you're willingly sold your soul to? Maybe his ultimate goal was to follow in daddy's footsteps and use a government helicopter to go out and buy a quart of milk.

The saddest thing is that history will not be kind to Sununu. One thing I've always admired about NH voters is how you essentially interrogate every presidential candidate. NH is no cakewalk for these candidates (unlike some of southern states), and you expose the BS, shit-and-shinola, and the "happy horseshit" (one of my dad's favorite expressions) for what it is. If a candidate can't survive the NH vetting process, they sure-as-shit ain't gonna make it to the White House. The point I'm trying to make is that NH voters have both intelligence and long memories. If Sununu tries to make any sort of a political comeback in NH, that campaign is going to go about as far as an under-powered car during spring mud season.
