I can’t believe we’re here. With Donald Trump, after everything he has done. And people who are elected to serve the American public spending all their time lying and making excuses for the worst human being ever, Donald Trump. Does the majority of the US want Donald Trump as king and dictator? Are we ready to lose all standing on the world stage? Are we ready for the actual consequences of elected Dictator Donald Trump? For Putin to overrun Ukraine and turn his attention to Poland, while Donald Trump applauds? For detention camps and mass deportations?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH US?? This should have been OVER after January 6. Donald Trump should be a distant, albeit nauseating memory.

I feel like I am living in a fever dream. I can’t even laugh at all about it. It just makes me feel like I will vomit.

Same feelings for me exactly.

Julie I agree with everything you said . But I assure you America with not elect Dictator Trump. Biden will be re elected in November

I fervently hope again that you’re right. I hope Trump will repulse the American majority once he really gets out there and starts drilling down on his campaign.

She wants it, but I doubt she is close enough to "from central casting" for that to be a thing. Trump has a type, and she is not his type.

Expand full comment

I'll bet she has some world-class "political knee pads" though, and would never tell him his tiny woody reminds her of a mushroom, as Stormy Daniels described his "gear."

Seriously, I think it has to be Noem or Kari Lake

Expand full comment

Well, Noem is certainly a possibility but I HIGHLY doubt it will be Lake.

First off, Trump NEVER wants to be upstaged and Kari Lake is loud and aggressive in her election denialism, but it’s WAY too much about HER. Secondly, he’s got the MAGA Cult covered and doesn’t need another “true believer” like Lake in order to win THAT demographic. Someone that has a slightly better chance with independents might be useful for Trump, and even though Chris is correct in how quickly she made the move to the right, she still has a bit of moderate “cred” left. Lastly, someone from New York on the ticket might be good, considering that Trump is clearly a Floridian now.

Of course, there’s only one person that truly knows the answer, and maybe even HE isn’t quite certain yet, especially given that he’s acknowledged he doesn’t have to make that decision yet. After his coronation on Super Tuesday, maybe then he’ll pivot to the general, where having a running mate will start to make more sense.

Expand full comment

Noem is certainly a good possibility. Trump might string Lake along for a while, but her claim to have had an election stolen from her takes away from the uniqueness of the conspiracy to deny him his second term.

Plus Noem will also do and say whatever Trump asks for, and she has less of an attack surface of crazy.

I think Stefanik may be trying a little too hard for the gig.

If you want to talk about really wanting to be vice president: Look at Tim Scott's endorsement and then his subsequent engagement. Subtlety is not his strong suit.

I think he is deciding between his son or daughter. Stefanik is in the running together with a few other crazies, but other than his daughter I think he will choose a male. I can’t see him running the risk of being grand stranded by a female - that’s something he won’t stand for. Either way, the key is to keep Trump and any GOP candidate (ie Haley) as far away from the White House as possible. We cannot possibly allow these people to make policy while they espouse the horrible rightist rhetoric they presently support. On every key issue they are out of line with the majority of Americans - abortion, guns, immigration, climate control, foreign policy, the economy - everything! I don’t know of any issue where the GOP even vaguely aligns with a humane approach that most Americans can abide. Because of this I just don’t understand why Trump continues to poll ahead of Biden. People need to get over the ridiculous notion that because Biden is 81 he is in any way cognitively impaired and thus unable to lead us for the next 5 years. Quite frankly it seems pretty clear to me that Trump is without doubt significantly cognitively impaired. But then in essence he always has been. It’s now further complicated by like some degree of ischemic dementia brought on by his likely significant arterial sclerosis. Overall there is no question that we need younger leaders again in the future, but for now there is also no question that we have to support Biden for this election cycle in order to keep America as the bastion of hope for the world’s immediate future. If we don’t, the rest of this century is going to be a very dangerous one on many levels.

I think Stefanik is in over her head. He would never choose a short, fat and not quite good looking woman as his VP.

Remember, he nixed Bob Corker for Secretary of State because he is short and didn’t look the part of a powerful Secretary of State.

The VP in Trump’s mind is more important than Sec.of State. If he chooses a woman, it would have to be Mace or Noem. Yet, I doubt he’ll chose a women in the end, unless its Ivanka. And for that, we’ll know soon enough, because he always tests the waters at his rallies before making those decisions; usually as a cliffhanger...:)

I was a wee bit more tactful, but yeah, you nailed it

Yeah, that’s the way I feel talking about Stefanik’s appearance, too. I don’t care, but Trump certainly does. So, I just make fun of the way she dresses.

As someone of Polish ancestry, with my mom's maiden name incredibly similar to hers, I will just say I'm so embarrassed.

I’m in her district and it amazes me that her supporters constantly misspell her name. The people that are appalled by her have no problem with it.

I grew up in the Adirondacks and the community to the north of us was heavily of Polish ancestry. Stefanik isn’t even that difficult. It’s not like it’s Wojciechowski or anything.

And how much do you want to bet that Stefanik is anglicized. My mom's true maiden name was Szczepaniak but was anglicized in the early 1900s to within two different vowel changes of Stefanik.

Yes, Stefanik is on the list, along with Kari Lake and Tim Scott.

Think you might want to look at Michael Flynn as a possible pick - yes, it’s crazy, however, he is a General, is loyal, is religious and backs Trump without reservation - what is there for Trump not to like? He is the kind of person Trump will want, although his advisors will push back hard.

Even putting Michael Flynn aside, I think Trump would want someone from the military if they could show sufficient loyalty.

You need to consider Marjorie T. Green and Kristi Noem (if for nothing else, the chance to be on Mount Rushmore), both have drawbacks to fit the Trump team. For MTG - she has become too in your face in everything - would not be likely to sit in the background and keep quiet like Mike Pence did for all of those years. Also not likely to attract different voters from the Trump base - Noem might.

Kellyanne Conway and Sarah Huckabee Sanders would be on his list as well.

Also think Mike Pompeo has gotten a look, however, like DeSantis, do not think he would attract a different voting constituency from Trump.

I do not think Tom Cotton will make the cut - will be afraid of another Mike Pence attack of conscience.

Do not put Tucker Carlson on the list - would be absurd. Too much ego to be safe...

I also think he will float among his team someone like Steven Miller - loyal, and hates immigrants as much or more than Trump.

Looking forward to your list, which I am sure will be more professional and accurate than mine.

Flynn would be a good suggestion if Trump wanted to double down on the crazy.

I would not misunderestimate Tim Scott's potential value - I don't think Trump would take Scott's halfhearted run against him (hell, it might have actually helped the consolidation behind Trump by splitting the early stage of the not-Trump contest a bit more).

Thanks, Terri. Misunderestimate is, IMHO, one of the most recursively self-demonstrating political malapropisms of the previous century (I trust you will appreciate my pedantry in pointing out that W's coining of the term, appropriately enough in Bentonville, AR, 6 Nov 2000, occurred in the 20th C, not the 21st).

One hopes that Striver Stefanik will trip in her six-inch heels she's not used to as she heads down the stairs to the stage to collect her prize, and ends up at the bottom, having Made America Great Again with her permanent departure. Of all of the collection of cowpies that constitutes the MAGA GOP, she is hands down Most Despicable.

I think Kari Lake and Nancy Mace are right up there with Stefanik--although both Lake and Mace might be a bit too 'aggressive' for the insecure Trump's taste.

I look forward to Elise Stefanik getting everything she deserves. I’m confident she’s well on her way to having her name in history right alongside people like Joe McCarthy. The veep spot would only solidify that.

Trump’s father put everyone in either the killer or loser category. That’s why he’s an election denialist. He even described his late brother, Fred as “not a killer.“

Re: Stefanik from Central Casting?

Trump chose his cabinet in part because he fashions himself a Hollywood Mogul able to pick the "look".

That said, Stefanik looks like she was the runner-up for the Adirondack Region

4H Miss Dairy Doll competition.

While she is as obnoxiously irrational as her political god, she's young enough to be a "comer" well beyond the death of her "precious."

Trump wants a blindly loyal sychophant (Pence 2.0)...cue Stepin Fetchit Scott as the type of Veep who only has eyes on Trump's career and specialness of being the greatest American president.
