Youngkin like most Republican office holders today, will do anything, particularly kissing Trump's ass, in order to hold on to power. I find it rather ironic that Liz Cheney has bigger balls than most all other Republicans. I don't agree with most of her political positions but I salute her taking a stand to uphold the Constitution and calling out the moral failure of her former colleagues.

And Adam Kinzinger. There are people on the right who also principled and patriotic. There just seems to be very few of them these days.

Agreed, all too few.

I hope the history books 100 years from now, if "history" is still allowed to be taught, will highlight what cowards all of these Republicans are. The word "spineless" should appear in the first sentence of all their obituaries as far as I'm concerned.

They thought they could contain the evangelical right and neo-Nazis all these years. They were wrong.

Virgnia Governor Glenn Youngkin's assurance that Donald Trump wouldn't be a dictator and his appallingly sychophantic and desecrating comparison of Trump to George Washington is just another example of cowardice by a Republican elected official who prizes their personal political ambition over our Constitution and laws. It's another nail in the coffin of the Republican Party. There is no Republican Party, only the cult of Trump and his enablers.

Cue Susan Collins explaining how Trump has learned his lesson.

Youngkin's comments are beyond stupid and beneath contempt. His attitude , which is shared by many other Rs , is what enables Trump and gives permission to otherwise sane people to vote for him. It's in large part tribalism. Rs like Youngkin just want to win. But we've all seen many years of Trump's ignorant and erratic comments and behavior. Bear in mind that countless , credible people who worked with Trump have testified to his lack of fitness and the danger he poses: e.g., Barr, Kelly, Tillerson, Mattis, Rosen, etc. Those folks need to join forces with folks like Romney and Cheney and make many oral and written public presentations. They need to put Country over party. It may not work , but they owe it to the Country to try.

What really terrifies me about the election and a possible Trump term is - imagine a state or federal official wanting to do the right thing and foil a Trumpian plan, but being afraid their life will be threatened by the MAGA mob. I recall death threats made to Georgia election workers

Who's to say that's not a part of Younkin’s calculation? In addition to others, and I mean Haley and other important figures.

Yeah…let’s call this the “hang Mike Pence” phenomenon. I could even see it rising to the Supreme Court being afraid to rule against Trump

How can you tell when Youngkin is lying? Look and see if his lips are moving. Fucking corporate slime.

"Youngkin is simply choosing to ignore what he knows because it’s not politically advantageous for him to criticize Trump. I get it. But that doesn’t make it right." No, indeed. It "doesn't make it right." It is, in fact, very, very wrong and it makes Youngkin's comments traitorous in the extreme when he defends someone who openly attempts to overthrow the government of the United States.

Feels like Youngkin is auditioning for a role in the Trump White House or Cabinet...Trump always likes those who say nice things about him to the media...

Youngkin is even stupider than I thought he was.

Youngkin is full of you-know-what, and he knows full well that Trump wants to be a de facto king. However, for Youngkin and so many others in his party, Team Republican is more important than Team America.

I wish we can just stop discussing the VERY hypothetical scenario of a second Trump Presidency because it is NOT going to happen. Talking about it once or so in a week is okay but to keep frightening people about is honestly pointless, because there WILL NEVER be another Trump presidency and here are some of the reasons; Look at the Economy today which has always been the no. one concern for the Electorate. It is very very sound by any metric you use. Inflation has and continues to cool off, Gas Prices are significantly down, Unemployment is at historically low level, and interest rate has stabilized and would start falling next year per the Fed Chair, GDP is high, Consumer confidence is rising, wage increase has started to outpace inflation sooner than we expect, the electorate will start feeling the very positive impacts of these great numbers. Who says Bidenomics is not working people?!!

Another factor to consider in favor of Joe Biden winning in 2024 is the Supreme court's gift that keeps on giving. They are out of step with where most American are, Democrats, Independents and a good no of Republicans. Remember Roe.V.Wade., There is going to be another landmark Abortion decision next year probably in late summer or so, just in time for the Presidential election in November. This is about whether to ban Mifepristone, an abortifacient widely used world wide in early pregnancy. If past is prologue, they are going to ban this great Drug in even the states that have enshrined Abortion in their constitution. This Decision would remind Most Americans that Trump appointed the Justices that keep taking Women's freedom away from them and if they vote for him, he will ban Abortion nationally. Also, the Supreme Court may rule that Trump is not immune to prosecution of his CRIMINAL behavior when he was in the office and so his trial with Judge Chuktan can start and end before the election. Also, the so called impeachment of Joe Biden without any evidence would work to his advantage. These and so many other factors will work together to elect Joe Biden is 2024

I appreciate your optimism, but until Biden's re-elected we have to be in crisis mode.

And I would add, until Biden is actually inaugurated again. Look at the terrible weeks between Election Day 2020 and January 2021. ANYTHING can happen. Ugh.

Youngkin = RUBE!

Chris, Robert Kagan's follow up OpEd piece in the WaPo stated that Trump can only be taken down IF the republicans speak up. Youngkin just put another spike in that logic (along with Sununu)! I'd still like your take on his two articles. Thanks for the great work!

I see these as the last days of America.

Voters even facing a barrage of evidence are only focusing on the trivial things. While the republicans pay homage to the lies and facist behavior we see, thus enabling our country to slip into dictatorship. I never thought I’d see people wanting to throw away this democracy and yet here we are. Losing to one man with one agenda: with liberty and justice for criminals and bandage for the population.

You should read The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory by Tim Alberta. I'm not finished yet, but he has identified the root cause of all of this.

We need a basic civics tutorial on why democracy matters. That it is our tradition isn’t enough. Under our democracy Trump got elected, Congress barely functions, SCOTUS makes decisions that are contrary to what the majority wants and precedents, Voter suppression is normal. Healthcare is a business and I haven’t even mentioned things on the state and local level...book banning, anti lbgtq, anti truth in education.

So explain to me like I’m six years old (yeah, I got this line from the movie) why should I care about democracy. Even as a Democrat, why shouldn’t I want a Blue dictator or King? Why should I want fair elections when about half the country seem like cruel fools? Should I accept it if in the next election Trump wins given our rules with the electoral college, voter suppression. If it comes down to a SCOTUS decision as in 2000, why should I accept it?
