No need to worry about what a second term Trump Presidency could be. Instead let's worry about what a Biden's 2nd term would be. He will consolidate his successful 1st term like Bidenomics etc and continue to improve America's image abroad.
Trump has already told us what he will do in a second term. He's not hiding it. If the independents who will decide this election swing things in Trump's favor because they're afraid of Biden being too old, then there's a part of me that thinks this country (or at least the people who vote for Trump) will deserve whatever he unleashes upon them. It is up to the voters to keep the lunatic out of the White House!
Famous New Yorker cartoon: two "intellectuals" in conversation (you can tell they are because the room has a wall of books in the background, and they have beards and patches on their corduroy jackets). One says to the other: "Yes, people who fail to understand history are condemned to repeat it. And we who do understand history are condemned to go along on the ride."
And WaPo, which commissioned it, says that poll is an outlier. Don't waste time on polls like that. Pay attention to the real polls, in which Democrats have won 27 of 30 special elections since the Unsupreme Court issued the Dobbs decision.
No most of them are Republicans for sure. Just look at the results of all the real polls results in the battle ground states. Now those are the REAL polls people.Democrats are doing very well inspite of what the talking and writing heads are saying
He has a lot of nerve saying that Biden doesn’t even know where he is half the time, and then ranting about windmills killing whales, of all things. But then, I guess it’s trump, so all he has is nerve, bluster, and insanity. The man is nuttier than a squirrel turd.
Your comment illustrates a bigger media narrative problem. (Chris, feel free to chime in here!) My take is that the media are inherently lazy and they like to fit things into some narrative they have developed. The Biden narrative is that he's old, so any time Biden has a misstatement they all grab hold of it. The Trump narrative is that he's crazy so when he goes on some rant that is worse than anything Biden does, he gets a free pass because he's just being crazy. So the MSM spends all their time basically DEFENDING Trump and PROSECUTING Biden for similar actions because of their lazy narratives.
I DO think it is a challenge to cover Trump. On the one hand, he feeds off of attention. On the other, he is the likely Republican nominee for president -- and continues to say things on a daily basis that are decidedly extreme.
I don’t think it’s just Trump and his crazy rants. I seriously think he could be exhibiting cognition issues. This should be more of a major media focus just like it is with Biden.
It's not just the MSM; it's also people like Brian Kemp, who claim that they have to vote for the crazy, authoritarian Republican, because Dems are too dangerous.
Amen Brother Chris. TFG was always a liar, grifter, rapist, and thief.
And he’s desperately worse now. His brain is dripping out of his orange nose. Thats why he sniffs all the time like a coke. freak. As far as I can tell.
That's the hard question. Do you ignore him? Because he feeds on attention? Or do you have to pay attention to him because, well, he is the frontrunner to be the Republican presidential nominee???
I think the Republican frontrunner saying absolute batshit crazytalk deserves some attention, there just has to be a balance where you don't feign outrage over every single one.
Yeah. He can be covered by the press without minimal mentions of his name, no video footage. Just report about him. But dont’t show his image, and refer to him w/out name, just “the R frontrunner” or TFG.
It will be like throwing water in the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz. He’ll just melt away.
How about paying more attention to the sitting President who is also the front runner for his own party nomination as well. This guy's (Biden) actions and what he says today impact our daily lives and not tge lies that Trump keep feeding us with. If he feeds on attention then starve him of the attention so that he does not keep lying and lying to us
I have so little respect, I am not willing to say this is not on purpose, to set up a potential “mental defect” defence, not necessarily to get acquittal, however, to avoid prison time if convicted.
The whales being killed is the same he said about birds being killed by windmills on land. He just does not like windmills.
Agree that he is getting worse. The scarier part is that he hasn’t reached bottom yet, if there is a bottom. The country will be in such deep trouble if he is back in the Oval Office. I am sure we will all be stunned as to how low this will go. I can not fathom how anyone can vote for him but then we have the deplorables. Sad!
Chris, nice thought provoking post. As you note in a comment, Trump's increasingly lunatic statements and plans present issues about press coverage. Some say the press should minimize coverage and protest , for example, the Meet the Press interview. I think that view is in error for two reasons. First, regardless what the mainstream media does, right wing media will cover his every move with glowing approval. Second, elections are won in the middle, and the more people in the middle hear and see how unhinged he is, the less likely he is to win. . The many people I know who are centrists and might vote for a a GOP candidate, are turned off by Trump's demeanor and plans -- when the actually see and hear him. But it's easy for some to forget about how nuts he is when all they see are campaign ads touting his record. He needs to be interviewed by aggressive people like Swan. Even Bret Baer's interview made Trump look foolish and cost him votes. I know people get upset seeing Trump spew his venom, but he won't go away b/c we ignore him. The hope is voters will reject him again if he's exposed for the fraud and know-nothing he is.
Yeah, count me as skeptical that ignoring Trump would have the effect his detractors seem to think it would. I think it would create an information vacuum which Trump and his right wing media allies would fill.
I admittedly live in a blue bubble. I've never actually met anyone in person who admitted to having voted for the one I disgustingly refer to as "the Cheeto" but I admit I can't in my wildest imagination figure out WHY he gets a single vote other than from the very wealthy who expect to benefit from him being in the White House again. Just to pick one issue, the idea of giving that idiot four more years with the clock ticking on climate change? How can anyone with children even consider that?
I have many relatives (some very close to me) who voted for Trump twice. Almost everyone of them tells me he is crazy and they wish a normie Republican would run, but will vote for him again in 2024 because Biden is too old, dangerous, etc. The root problem is that they, like many liberals I know, will never never ever vote for the other party. It just does not matter what their side does, they cannot vote for anyone but their "team".
Please Cathy don't even bother to want to imagine Trump ever becoming the President again. He will never be again in spite of some talking and writing heads trying to create that illusion or plant that idea in our subconsciousness
Sure, we all see how nuts he is. But, does it bother Brian Kemp or Lindsey Graham or any other Republican politicians?
All we can hope is that it bothers enough independent voters who might not relish the thought of American gulags which are looking like they’re going to be increasingly full.
The good news(?) is that he’s probably going to get increasingly insane over the next 13 months as his cognitive problems progress and the stress from any number of criminal trials takes its toll. I’m thinking it’s relevant that Fred Trump senior died with dementia. And he was a picture of health next his fast food gobbling, exercise and book avoiding progeny.

ABC poll have Trump up 51-42 vs Biden. That's gotta include a lot of independents.
And WaPo, which commissioned it, says that poll is an outlier. Don't waste time on polls like that. Pay attention to the real polls, in which Democrats have won 27 of 30 special elections since the Unsupreme Court issued the Dobbs decision.

I would love to see the Biden narrative applied to him. Trump said X. Is this a sign he is senile, losing a step? He seems so old.
It's not just the MSM; it's also people like Brian Kemp, who claim that they have to vote for the crazy, authoritarian Republican, because Dems are too dangerous.
The mainstream media isn't lazy, it is its business model to sell advertising, therefore, they go after the lowest common denominator to grab eyes.
More suitable is that too many networks/cable outlets are akin to drug dealers.
In the late 20th century the term used to attract viewers and readers was "If it bleeds, it leads."
The contemporary version of that is, "sell them crack," and who is more 100% potent than the Criminal-In-Chief?
Serious journalism outlets are concerned with framing Trump in a way in which he doesn't control the narrative.
We have only seen this accomplished once, by Jonathan Swan.
Otherwise, all other attempts have been useless in having Trump show his inadequacies, ignorance, and criminally narcissistic behavior.
Mr. Edward, you truly hit the nail on tye head!!
Anything Trump says about anyone else is something he is doing. Anything he says he won't do is something he's planning to do.
With Trump, whenever you think he can't be worse than he is right now and there is no lower bar, he manages to find it.
Amen Brother Chris. TFG was always a liar, grifter, rapist, and thief.
And he’s desperately worse now. His brain is dripping out of his orange nose. Thats why he sniffs all the time like a coke. freak. As far as I can tell.
He is NUTS! Let’s face it, if anyone else said the kind of crazy crap he says, we’d call him nuts.
If you are not aware of the novel "It Can't Happen Here," by Sinclair Lewis, I suggest you at least read the wiki page on it.
90 years ago, Lewis presciently fictionalized Americam life if fascists took control.
While the author was going after Huey Long, then governor of Louisiana, the issues are as fresh as the daily spoutings of the Fascist-In-Chief.
As Maya Angelo stated "The first time someone shows you who they are, beleive them."
Unfortunately, too many Americans think Trump is not as bad as his words portray, equalled only by those willing to live under such a regime.
His truths (?) are definitely not getting as much attention as they should.
It's complicated.

Media has to own the fact that they created President Trump. That was on them.
Which is why he posts crazier and crazier crap. Trying desperately to break in and get the response he used to get in 2016 and 2020.
I agree he getting worse.
I have so little respect, I am not willing to say this is not on purpose, to set up a potential “mental defect” defence, not necessarily to get acquittal, however, to avoid prison time if convicted.
The whales being killed is the same he said about birds being killed by windmills on land. He just does not like windmills.
He DOES have a thing against windmills. For sure.
Plus he also claimed that windmills cause cancer. Maybe THAT'S how the windmills are killing the birds and whales!! :)
He has Don Quixote syndrome.
He doesn't like windmills off the coast of his "be-yooo-tea-ful" golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Agree that he is getting worse. The scarier part is that he hasn’t reached bottom yet, if there is a bottom. The country will be in such deep trouble if he is back in the Oval Office. Yeah, damned if we do and fucked if we don't.
And goodbye, free Ukraine. Among other losses.

So very scary. I can't even imagine the horror of him being president again.

Yikes 😳
God preserve USA and the people.
