I shared your ambivalence towards the SOTU address. If anything, these days it just gives the malcontents and morons (looking at YOU, MTG) a chance to get their mugs on tv a bit more, which is all they want, and the substance of what is being said is lost.
Hmmm. I watched sotu on my iPad with a headset so as not to perturb my MAGA mate. I'm really glad I did as it was great. Sometimes I just want to read the summary the next day. So if i understand correctly if you are not getting paid to pay attention to sotu you don't care? Using only TV as your metric nobody cares? Most of the time i love your So What column although this one was kind of a miss.
They have lost some luster. In the days before YouTube, I used to record SOTU on a VCR so I could rewatch later if I wanted. Now, I just read a transcript. If even that. Since heckling became the most newsworthy aspect, it's hard to watch.
I like tradtion, but I wouldn't be too sad if this one faded away.
So let me get this straight, Chris... your situation has changed re SOTU address & your consequent interests & that should relegate the event to ‘non-status’??? Sorry if I’m being brutally honest but give your head a shake... what makes you think that the political world we all live in revolves around you??? Perhaps a bit of respect for the President, after all how many people voted for him???
Maybe the fact that the parties are so fed up with ‘main-stream’ reporting on politics is a good reason to continue with the Presidential talk. The fact that Biden is renowned for being a poor public speaker & the fact that most of the Republican/frightwing couldn’t care less what he said. That makes about 75 million people.
As for, “none of that would matter if the actual speech was news-making or memorable in any meaningful way...” I suspect you’ll remember how Biden made a mockery of the GOP/MAGA flip-flop on Social Security & Medicare, not to mention again how much class they bring to the party.
Obviously, it’s been said before, ‘Man hears what he wants to & disregards the rest’.
Maybe people should use their ears a bit more than their mouths... then again, maybe you're just a bit tired of having to post everyday.........
Mr. Cillizza, I've been a long-time fan of yours and am glad I can read your articles again, but with the deepest of respect I think you're sending out articles too frequently and you'd get more attention from your readers if the frequency was twice a week.

Brilliant name for your new book.

Poor Chris. When you’re used to working days it’s a bitch to have to work all evening. Tough. Some of us enjoy the theater.
Maybe restructuring it altogether into something new? That said, it’s a golden tv moment for the president
