I'll take Fetterman anyday over the empty suits sitting on the right side of the aisle. What he is doing is calling out the silliness of focusing on things with no bearing on the country's problesms and how to solve them.
Reading through the comments, seems this column really touched a nerve. My take, FWIW - decorum is generally helpful to assist in civil debate, something our government requires to function. But decorum can take different forms, like dress or tone of voice or civil words. As long as Senator Fetterman is civil in word and tone, the clothing is not important. Like jeans and cowboy boots would not be important. However, there are many recent instances where decorum in tone and word has been sadly lacking over in the House. To me, that is far worse and far more disrespectful. "Empty suits and dresses" for sure.
RE: "...Fetterman’s campaign would return Menendez’s $5,000 donation “in envelopes stuffed with $100 bills.”
Regardless of how this guy dresses (I'm not a fan) this has to be the best dis since a guy paid his delinquent property tax bill in pennys outside a rural county government office.
While I am happy for him to have, hopefully, not only treated his depression but helped someone else. If his depression and hospitalization helped even 1 person, that is a plus. Hopefully, he can keep it at bay, it may be a life long struggle. The rigors and stress of politics is enough to send anyone down the rabbit hole and not know how to get out, someone dealing with a mental illness its doubly hard. I am also glad that he has found his voice and coming into his own. I do like his comedic relief and, from what I can tell seems like a nice guy. I disagree with the relaxation of the dress code as I feel that there should be respect when in the chamber. I think shorts and hoodies are just not appropriate for a congressman or congresswoman. Keeping the dress code for the staff and letting the senators in shorts and hoodies??? Doesn’t even make any sense.
My preference for attire in both the House and Senate is for fire suits, much like race car drivers and crews wear, including sponsors' patches. At least that way we'd know who they're really working for.
While I'm not a fan of the senator's choice of attire, wearing a suit does not an effective legislator make. The least they could do would be to ban both red and blue ties, which many seem to wear as battle gear.
Hey lefties!! Think about this for 30 seconds before typing. If a Senator from Wyoming asked Schumer for the okay to wear jeans and a cowboy hat on the Senate floor, YOU'D BE OUTRAGED. But a lefty wanting to dress like he's working the alley? No problem. Your hypocrisy should embarrass you, but you're incapable of the emotion. Another race to the bottom, promoted by leftists. Kudos.
I couldn't care less what any politician wears, Democrat or Republican, as long as they do their job and not spew forth conspiracy theories or line their own pockets at the possible detriment of their country and constituents. Go troll somewhere else.
Kind of hostile there, Kevin. I am pretty far left of center, and I think Senators should dress like they are in a serious place doing a serious job. I don't like how Fetterman dresses. But that's a separate issue from his doing the right thing re Menendez. I agree with him on that, and I think the same principle should apply to constrain Trump to drop out. In fact, Trump said that the investigations (not indictments) concerning Hillary were disqualifying back in 2016. What is your view re Trump's running for office given the myriad serious charges he faces?
Hey, Bung. I judge a person by their actions and thoughts. What they think and say. Content of their character and such. Your "Hey lefties" and assuming we'd object to someone dressed jeans and a cowboy hat is insulting, altho I do object to hats being worn indoors.
Typical GQP whacko - making an offensive assertion and assigning that trait to non-Qult45 members.
Your assumptions about the mindset of "lefties" is totally misguided, based on no evidence whatsoever. I know lots of lefties (I am one). We'd have no problem whatsoever if someone wore a cowboy hat on the Senate floor. Maybe you should set aside your anger and get to know some lefties.

pj,
Never made the connection before your point.
WTF makes a difference if he shows up on the Senate floor in hoody and hipster shorts when most of the others show up in "empty" suits.
BTW - just remembered a historical point. Davey Crockett went to the House floor in buckskins. I think the Coonskin cap was a Disney thing.)
On the bright side, they’ll probably never find a half million bucks and gold bars hidden in Fetterman’s shorts and hoodies.
thank you for highlighting the senator. while the word is far overused, he is incredibly authentic which amazingly refreshing
More people seem upset about a dress code in the senate than an ethics code in the Supreme Court.
The more Fetterman rattles their cage and shakes up the complacent and makes the comfortable uncomfortable, the better I like him.
Fetterman's sense of humor is almost as wonderful as yours, CC!
I disagree to a point--it has been a "bumpy ride" for Senator Fetterman, but almost exclusively in the right wing echo chamber.
Well, I think that has something to do with it. But being hospitalized for depression is definitely a challenge too.
Only if someone has never battled depression and/or is employed at Fox News. I have dealt with it, more than once.
I think calling House Republicans a bunch of jagoffs is a clear sign of his improving mental health.

Ah...a breath of fresh air!

I'm enjoying Fetterman's political performance schtick but what legislation has he initiated?
S.2876 118th. Congress. Bill to cancel school meal debt.
Many bills. I found them on Gov.Trac
Oh, that's a great one!
I scanned this eagerly looking for a Leroy Jenkins reference

I know you may be insulted by my guess that you are commenting from a troll farm. Peace Out.
He’s a hot toxic mess Chris.
And how is you personal life going?
Judgmental much?
