Too little, too late, is right. I’m so tired of these people stepping up when they’ve got absolutely nothing to lose and acting like they’re so morally superior.
And let's be honest- if three Republicans were adamant about voting no on a cabinet secretary, you think McConnell would be the one to sink them? I doubt it.
McConnell's performative votes are meaningless compared to the damage he has done. His failure to support impeachment, came after his destruction of the Supreme Court. Perhaps he should be known as "the great enabler."
This is an interesting example of what politics could look like with term limits for congressional members. What percent of votes made by members of Congress are driven by re-election and party status vs. moral consciousness? Could it be 100%? If there were term limits, how would that change? The irony is that it's precisely because congressional action is driven by re-election and party status that term limits could most likely NEVER be instituted.
I've long argued for reasonable, sensible term-limits in all levels of government.
I remember what my Grandfather was like in his 80's......and then into his early 90's.....he had NO business holding any job, much less one that held the fate of American society in his hands.
I'd rather have campaign finance reform than arbitrary term limits. If you can take money out of the equation, might also change behavior. People keep underestimating the value of experience.
I'm not sure they'd necessarily be arbitrary. There are age limits for specific jobs in the military or even commmercial pilots. Why not start from that point? Comm pilots serve until 65. If you rounded up to say 70....72 - would that not strike that balance of age and experience?
Also - 100% - eliminating the money - you'd also curb people's worst tendencies.
Mitch McConnell showed his true "ethics" when he blocked the legitimate SCOTUS pick of Barrack Obama in 2016 (unprecedented at the time) because it was an election year and "the people should decide." And in 2020 under the exact same circumstances (but even closer to the election), he and his slim Republican majority fast-tracked Amy Coney Barrett.
Yeah... that's the real Mitch McConnell. Flouting rules and ethics throughout his tenure. I'm sure he wishes he stopped Trump when he had the chance. But his ethics are questionable at best. True history (as opposed to MAGA propaganda) will rightfully cast him as an amoral coward. FDG = Eff dat guy
So true and it in no way makes up for refusing to have Merrick Garland as a Supreme Court judge!!!! 3 votes that at this point in our republic mean nothing. A Pyrrhic victory as far as I am concerned. An old man attempting to salvage something of his exceptionally tarnished name & reputation!!!!
Chris - you hit the nail on the head. In his biggest decision he swung and missed on impeaching Trump for January 6. History changing decision by the “great tactician”. McConnell having no backbone is the reason we are in the mess we’re in with this administration. He had a chance to end it and didn’t. It’s his fault and that’s what he’ll be remembered for
He has no conscience, never has, never will. It was always about him, his power, his party. To late, he has doomed the country to what we have now and it is ALL ON HIM. Spare me...
Go back to that date and time. Look at what he saw and believed. Everyone, McConnell included, believed Trump was done. No one comes back from January 6th! McConnell believed, I’m sure, the courts would certainly take care of Trump. Who could have ever predicted Trump would come back bigger and stronger than ever before??? I’m sure that played into his decision.
Yup, special place down there for The Turtle. Couldn't believe on his 60 Minutes interview that he said he still voted for Trump. Why? Because he is a Republican, of course. Therein lies the biggest problem we have in this country, party over country.
Future history books could devote whole chapters to the votes McConnell cast that fundamentally changed this country for the worse (SCOTUS). He’s sticking it to Trump because he can and he loathes him, this isn’t some kind of awakening, or salvaging his reputation, it’s retribution.
If I remember correctly, it was even worse than Chris describes. McConnell purposefully delayed the start of the Senate proceedings until after Trump was out of office. Then, he used the loophole he'd created. Grrrr. I'm glad he's voting as he has, but the crap he pulled with the Garland appointment will never go away. I think Garland would have been a fine Justice and we would have likely had a more aggressive AG under Biden.
McConnell’s three ‘nay’ votes remind me of a deathbed confession where a person who has perhaps killed, maimed, and/or extorted others over decades is now seeking absolution for these transgressions. The religious functionary at the bedside may be able to “grant absolution,” thereby giving the dying individual hope of entering heaven. However, I say, “good luck with that” when reaching the Pearly Gates.

Agreed, it’s a joke! Both sides, plenty of examples. It’s all about self interest and $$$$$ of course!
He doesn't want to burn in hell.
Might be too late for saving.
Never forget that on the night Obama was elected, Mitch declared that his stated goal in life was to make certain that Obama was a one term president.
And let's not forget that Mitch single-handedly denied Obama the supreme court pick that turned the tide against democracy.
At his core, I do believe Mitch is an institutionalist and understands the harm that our country is being subjected to.
Unfortunately, his revelation comes a few years too late.
Well, for his votes in the Senate this term, he'll be spared a cool spot in hell.
McConnell still endorsed Trump last year.
And let's be honest- if three Republicans were adamant about voting no on a cabinet secretary, you think McConnell would be the one to sink them? I doubt it.
This isn't exactly Profiles in Courage

I really like this observation.

You reap what you sow, Mitch...and we all suffer.

Too little, too late, Mitch. No redemption for you!

Dutch - this may well be true but doesn't excuse him. In fact, makes him even more craven.
And, I think that is what made him a great politician. ZERO conscience needed when acquisition and maintenance of power is the true goal.
And here we are.
To be clear, I'm not happy about it. Not one bit. The Turtle, in no way, matches w/my worldview.
But since politics is about winning/losing.....acquiring/maintaining power it's impossilbe NOT to see how effective his ruthless techniques were.

Can you buy your soul back?
